How do I get a Web Page account?
To obtain a web page account go to CSS-113 and
fill out the form labeled "Email/Web Account
Request Form". On the form where it says
"Access Requested" make sure that you
put a check in the box labeled "Web
Page". In about a week, you will be mailed a
form that has your user-id and password. Your
user-id is in all lowercase and your password is
a mixture of upper and lower case, so make sure
that you type them EXACTLY as shown.
How much does this account cost?
It's Free!. You must be a currently registered
student or a currently employed faculty or staff
member to qualify for an account. Of course, if
you use a modem, you may incur phone charges.
If I forget my password, how do I get
another one?
If you forgot your password or your password
doesn't work, first make sure that you typed it
correctly. If this still does not work, go in
person to CSS-113 and a new one will be given to
you.
What is the Internet?
The Internet, sometimes called the information
super-highway, is a huge network of networks, all
interconnected to exchange information through
out the world. Originally born out of projects
named DARPAnet, ARPANET, and NSFnet, the Internet
has no owner or board of directors. It has been
called by some an example of working anarchy. As
of August 1994, more than 20,000 networks on
every continent connecting more than 3 million
computers were part of the Internet. With 1,000
new networks and 100,000 computers per month
being added. This large network provides a wealth
of information on a variety of subjects. Users
access this information using programs like
E-mail, gopher, telnet and web browsers.
Can you give me examples of using Telnet
and FTP?
Telnet allows a user to login to a remote
computer to use applications.
From the turbo prompt try:
telnet
library.kean.edu
telnet
library.rutgers.edu
telnet
downwind.sprl.umich.edu 3000
FTP, which stands for File Transfer Protocol.
It is used when you want to transfer a file from
one system to another. If you wanted to download
a file from Microsoft, at the turbo prompt ftp
you might type: ftp
ftp.microsoft.com . You would then
login as an anonymous user and type your
E-mail address as your password. Then you can
use FTP commands like get or put to
transfer files.
What is the World-Wide-Web?
The World Wide Web (WWW) is a hyper media
system that lets you access information on the
Internet. WWW is a major step forward in making
the process of looking for information fast,
powerful, and intuitive. The Web is based on a
technology called hyper-text or more accurately,
Hyper media because it can handle graphics and
sounds in addition to text. Internet Explorer and
Netscape are two of the most popular web
browsers. These browsers allow you to look at
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) pages.
How do I get my own Home Page?
First, you may want to look at the HTML
beginners guide on the Kean University Web page.
Next you should create a directory named WWW.
Next, create a hypertext file named: Welcome.html
and save it in your WWW directory. To give other
rights to look at your web page, at the turbo
prompt type: chmod 755 WWW. Then point
your web browser to the address http://www.kean.edu/~user-id.
To have your page linked to the Kean University
home page, you must fill out a URL Inclusion
form, which can be obtained in CSS-113. Please
read it carefully, remember that whatever you put
on the web is how the world sees you as a person.
How do I connect to turbo?

telnet turbo.kean.edu or telnet 131.125.1.1
