Degree Programs - Program in Political Science

The Political Science Department at Kean University offers an academically-rigorous program at the theoretical and applied levels in the various subfields of American Government, International Relations, Comparative Politics, and Political Theory. This program helps you acquire the conceptual skills and research tools necessary to understand not only our political system, but also international politics and the cultures, and systems that govern other societies. Furthermore, the program provides experience in applied politics and prepares you to participate as an effective citizen in local, national, and international political institutions and organizations that impact your life. It also enables you to contribute effectively to the public good seen as essential to individual well-being and security in our increasingly diverse society and global economy.

THE VALUE OF POLITICAL SCIENCE

Those of you who earn a liberal arts degree in political science find opportunities in a wide variety of careers. You may go on to law school or graduate school, or to jobs in law enforcement, business, journalism, environmental consulting, teaching, and public service. Political Science, like its sister fields in the social sciences and liberal arts, should help any student develop reasoning and analytical skills and build competence in oral and written communications.

Each semester, the Political Science Department participates in an Open House workshop sponsored by the college. Prospective students meet in person with a faculty member to discuss the opportunities that the department offers its students. Students study political systems that govern their, and other citizens', lives.

STUDENT FRIENDLY AND SUPPORTIVE

Political Science is one of the University¹s most ''student-friendly''departments. With small classes, professors get to know you personally. Collectively, they demonstrate a commitment to students and to excellence in teaching, working overtime, mentoring and counseling students for graduate schools and post-college careers. Our faculty are also distinguished scholars. Among them are nationally and internationally respected authorities on Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the United Nations, as well as American, International/Comparative Politics and Political Theory. Most have traveled and studied extensively abroad, and several are active in civic and political life, bringing to the classroom first-hand knowledge of political affairs. They include a consultant to members of Congress and other governmental agencies; regular guests on television programs; those who are actively involved in programming and consulting with major corporate, union and private non-profit agencies as well as governmental entities across New Jersey; as well as those who are frequently interviewed by the press. These experiences make for a rich educational climate where theory is related to real-life politics and students are provided opportunities to participate with faculty in experiencing those linkages.
