WHERE CAN I GET INFORMATION ABOUT THE KEAN OCEAN PROGRAM?

WHERE IS KEAN UNIVERSITY LOCATED ON THE OCEAN COUNTY COLLEGE CAMPUS?
The administrative headquarters of Kean at OCC are in room 10 of the OCC library. The phone number for the office is 732.255.0356. Its general email address is email@example.com. The office is open every weekday except Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Tuesdays, the office remains open from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Kean classes are held chiefly in OCC’s Instructional Building but in other buildings as well. Nursing classes are offered chiefly at OCC’s Southern Educational Center in Manahawkin.
Kean faculty offices are located chiefly in the Instructional Building and to a lesser extent in the Kean administrative headquarters in the OCC library. Kean professors of Nursing also hold office hours at the Southern Educational Center in Manahawkin and in the OCC Nursing Building on the Toms River campus.
ARE ALL THE CLASSES I NEED FOR MY KEAN DEGREE OFFERED AT OCEAN?
Yes. All courses necessary to complete a Kean degree posted on www.kean.edu/keanocean are offered at the Ocean campus. It is important to keep in mind, however, that the number of sections being offered at Ocean for any given course will unavoidably be fewer than the number of sections being offered at Union for the same course. This difference reflects the simple difference in the sizes of the Kean student bodies at the two campuses. There are over fourteen thousand students in Union, enough to allow many sections of a given course to be offered at many different times and days. On the other hand, there are just over fifteen hundred Kean students at Ocean (as of the Spring 2011 semester), and thus necessarily fewer sections are offered there To discover the specific Kean offerings now being run at Ocean-and whether they work well with your personal circumstances-go to the Kean Ocean Web page and follow the directions posted there for doing so. Note that Kean classes at Ocean are always designated as “K” sections-section K1, K2, etc.-while Union classes are typically designated exclusively by numbers-section 1, 2, etc. Remember that you are always free to register for a class in Union as well as one at Ocean. There are no restrictions on your access to any Kean course based upon the location of its offering. Simply select a Union section, if you wish. Note that the distance between the campuses-parking lot to parking lot-is just 60 miles (under an hour) on the Garden State Parkway.
DO I HAVE TO GO TO UNION TO DO ANYTHING?
No. Whenever you encounter some procedure or receive directions seeming to require you to go to the Union campus to have something accomplished, contact the Kean Ocean administrative office in room 10 of the OCC library (732.255.0356; firstname.lastname@example.org). Alternate procedures that do not require traveling to Union are generally in place or will be arranged as necessary.
HOW CAN I FIND OUT WHAT KEAN CLASSES ARE BEING OFFERED AT OCEAN?

HOW DO I KNOW WHETHER A CLASS IS MEETING AT OCEAN OR AT UNION?
Kean classes that meet at the Ocean campus are designated “K” sections-K1, K2, etc-while Union classes are typically designated exclusively by numbers-section 1, 2, etc. Classes meeting at Ocean also have OCC listed in the location column and in the comments section for class listings on the KeanWISE registration system. The building assignments of classes at Ocean also specify the OCC site-OINS, for instance, for a class meeting in the Instructional Building at Ocean.
WHERE DO KEAN CLASSES MEET AT OCEAN?
Kean classes at Ocean meet primarily in classrooms on the second floor of the OCC Instructional Building, but they meet as well in all other classroom buildings on campus.
DO I NEED A PARKING STICKER TO ATTEND KEAN CLASSES AT THE OCEAN CAMPUS?
Student parking on the OCC campus does not require a parking sticker, regardless of whether you are a Kean student or an OCC student. Note, however, that parking on Kean’s Union campus does require a permit. See www.kean.edu/parking for obtaining one. Generally, you will receive your permit in the mail and will not need to travel to Union to pick one up. You should request a permit at your earliest convenience whether or not you presently plan to ever attend a class in Union. You may well discover a reason eventually to visit the Union campus, and you will need a permit to park there when you do.
CAN I TAKE KEAN CLASSES IN UNION IF I WANT TO?
Yes. Kean students may register for any Kean class being offered, regardless of its location. Simply login to the KeanWISE registration system (webreg.kean.edu) and select the section you prefer. Note that Kean classes at Ocean are always designated as “K” sections-section K1, K2, etc.-while Union classes are typically designated exclusively by numbers-section 1, 2, etc. Also note that the distance between the campuses-parking lot to parking lot-is just 60 miles (under an hour) on the Garden State Parkway.
DOES KEAN OFFER ONLINE CLASSES?
Kean offers no comprehensive program of online courses-that is, no complete degrees online-but it does offer individual online courses across a variety of disciplines. These courses are generally the offerings of individual faculty with an interest in online instruction. Many if not most of these classes meet in person for the first class of the semester-in Union-before continuing online for the remainder of the semester. With rare exception, the online classes are listed only among the offerings of the Union campus rather than those of the Ocean campus. They are designated as online or distance-learning classes in the comments section of each course listing on the KeanWISE system. At present, there is no automated filter on the KeanWISE interface to selectively search for online courses. You must browse the comments column for all courses.
WHERE IS THE GRADUATION CEREMONY HELD FOR KEAN OCEAN STUDENTS?
Kean University holds two commencement ceremonies. Each includes together both Kean Ocean students and Union students. Undergraduate commencement (for students receiving bachelor’s degrees) takes place at the PNC Center in Holmdel. Graduate commencement (for students receiving master’s or doctoral degrees) takes place at the (very beautiful) New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark (very nearby Penn Station and the Prudential Center, where the NJ Devils play).
WHERE DO I GET MY KEAN ID?
Kean Ocean students may obtain a university ID at the Kean Ocean administration office in room 10 on the bottom floor of the OCC library.
HOW DO I ENROLL IN KEAN?
Like almost all four-year colleges and universities, Kean is not an open-admissions school. Students must apply for admission by certain deadline dates and must meet certain admission standards. Click here to apply as either an undergraduate student or a graduate student.
In addition to enrolling in Kean in these conventional ways, OCC students may take advantage of the Kean-OCC Joint-Admission program, through which students are granted advance admission to Kean as early as the first day of their enrollment in OCC. Click here to apply to OCC, and select the option for joint-admission to Kean (subject to all the usual requirements for admission… such as a 2.0 GPA… at the time of full matriculation into Kean). Once you do, OCC will include you on a list they send to Kean once each semester of all OCC students who are intending to pursue a Kean degree upon completion of their OCC associate’s degree. Kean examines these lists to identify any OCC students who have completed at least 30 credits and who have attained a GPA of at least 2.0. Kean sends those students letters asking them to confirm their intention to earn a Kean degree and inviting them to complete a “matriculation-facilitation” form. Once this form is received and processed by Kean, a student may begin taking Kean classes (subject to the permission of his/her Kean academic adviser) while he/she is still completing his/her OCC degree. When the student completes his/her OCC degree, he/she continues on seamlessly with his/her Kean course work.
There is one other way of enrolling in Kean… as a non-matriculated student. Non-matriculated students are students who have not completed the regular admission process for Kean and who are being permitted to register for a limited number of credits (12 as an undergraduate and 6 as a graduate student) upon providing evidence of eligibility for such a privilege. Visiting students from other schools, for instance, may register as non-matriculated students at Kean. See the link for the Registration Eligibility Form on the Registrar’s Web site to obtain non-matriculated registration privileges. Note that registration as a non-matriculated student disqualifies a student from obtaining financial aid through Kean.
WHEN WILL I FIND OUT WHETHER I HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED BY KEAN?
In general it takes two to three weeks from the time we receive all of your application documents, including your transcripts, for a decision to be made on your application. Kean uses a “self-managed” application process that assigns you a login ID to the KeanWISE system and allows you to check the status of your application on your own. DOES THE EMAIL ACCOUNT I HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED THROUGH THE MAIL MEAN THAT I HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED TO KEAN?
No. Every applicant to Kean receives an email account simply to facilitate communication between the university and the applicant. Once the account has been assigned, the university will use it (and ONLY it) to communicate with you by email. It will not send messages to your personal email account, although you may set your Kean email account to automatically forward messages to any other email account you prefer.
WHAT IS THE JOINT-ADMISSION PROGRAM?
The Kean-OCC Joint-Admission Program grants OCC students advance admission to Kean without requiring the student to submit a conventional application for admission as a transfer student once the student has completed his/her OCC associate’s degree. Students may enter the Joint-Admission Program by choosing the option on their initial application form for OCC or by submitting a special postcard for this purpose to the OCC Office or Registration and Records at any time during their enrollment at OCC. Once each semester (usually late in each semester), OCC sends to Kean a list of all students who have chosen the Joint-Admission Program. The list includes academic information such as the number of credits earned and grade-point averages. Kean identifies on the list any student who has completed at least 30 credits and attained at least a 2.0 grade-point average. It then sends to these students a letter asking them to confirm their intention to pursue a Kean degree and inviting them to complete a matriculation-facilitation form for this purpose. Upon receiving the matriculation-facilitation form for a student, Kean establishes the student in the Kean system, grants the student registration privileges at Kean, and evaluates the student’s OCC completed credits for their use toward the particular Kean degree being sought.
The timing of the above sequence is important. If, for instance, a student who never entered the Joint-Admission program decides in January to begin taking Kean classes in September (after completing his/her associate’s degree in May), he or she would be better off submitting a conventional application in January for admission as a transfer student rather than submit a card to OCC for entry into the Joint-Admission Program. Submitting the conventional transfer application in January would ensure completion of the admission process by March and allow the student to take advantage of advance registration (held as early as April) for the Fall semester. Waiting for the Joint-Admission process to be completed may well delay establishment and registration as a Kean student until July, when many desired Kean classes may have already filled up.
AM I AN OCC STUDENT OR A KEAN STUDENT?
You are a student of the institution in which you are matriculated. Matriculation means you have applied for admission to some degree or certificate program offered by a school; you have met the school’s admission criteria for that program; and you have been accepted (matriculated) by the school to start you course work for that program in a particular semester. Schools sometimes allow students to take a limited number of courses prior to that semester of matriculation or to take a limited number of courses without applying to a particular program at all. Students enrolled on such a basis are enrolled as non-matriculated students.
Typically, students pursuing a Kean degree at the Ocean site complete the first half of the degree work taking Ocean County College courses as matriculated OCC students (with the OCC courses substituting eventually for Kean’s own courses). At some point, these students change their matriculation from OCC to Kean.
If they have signed up for the Kean-OCC Joint-Admission program while still matriculated at OCC, students will be granted registration privileges at Kean even before they have completed their OCC associate’s degree, and they may choose to define themselves as matriculated at Kean (rather than OCC) anytime after they have completed at least 51 OCC credits that will count toward their Kean degree (as defined on the Kean Ocean guide sheets posted on the Kean Ocean home page). Once they decide to define themselves as matriculated at Kean (rather than OCC), they must arrange their financial aid through Kean and seek permission from their Kean advisers for every OCC course they wish to take henceforth.
If a student has not signed up for the Kean-OCC Joint-Admission program while still matriculated at OCC, he/she must apply for admission to Kean as a transfer student in the conventional way (and pay the conventional application fee) before he/she may become a matriculated Kean student.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT TRANSFER CREDITS WILL BE ACCEPTED BY KEAN?
Will my OCC grades be included in determining whether I will graduate Kean with honors?
No. All colleges and universities typically consider only their own grades in determining the qualification for graduating with honors. They also require a minimum number of credits to be earned from their own courses in order to qualify for honors. Kean’s minimum number of Kean credits for this purpose is 45. That is, in order to qualify for graduation with honors, you must graduate with at least 45 credits earned from Kean courses. See page 31 of the present undergraduate catalog (http://www.kean.edu/admin/uploads/pdf/Undergraduate_Catalog.pdf) for the full policy governing graduation with honors.
Students enrolled in Kean Ocean programs that do not offer the full 45 credits at the Ocean County College location may request to substitute transfer courses with permission from their faculty adviser and as approved by the College Dean. Grades earned for the substituted courses will be used to determine honors eligibility (to satisfy the 45 credit requirement), but will not be included in the final cumulative grade point average or final honors designation. The final cumulative grade point average will be determined by credits and grades earned at Kean University (Kean Ocean) only. Students should contact their faculty adviser or their Dean's Office with any questions.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT COURSES TO TAKE?The course requirements for your major are listed in the university’s catalog posted on the university’s home page and on the curriculum guide sheets posted at the Kean Ocean page. Note that all Kean Ocean guide sheets include Ocean County College courses as substitutes for roughly half of Kean’s own, while the catalog lists only Kean’s own courses. Note also that the requirements for your program are always defined by the catalog in effect the semester you enter Kean. When changes are made to your major, you are always free to follow the new curriculum or to continue observing your original one.
In selecting your courses, you must also consult with your faculty adviser. Advisers and their contact information are posted on the advisement Web page. Note that at the beginning of every registration cycle, a block is imposed on your registration privileges. Only your faculty adviser can remove this block, and you must receive advisement from him or her before he or she does so.
HOW DO I CONTACT MY ADVISER?
Kean Ocean advisers are posted on the advisement Web page. In addition to the advisers identified on this site, another adviser may be assigned to you and identified on your personal KeanWISE page. This adviser may well be a professor located at the Union campus. You may receive advisement from this professor as well as from the one posted on the Kean Ocean page, but the professor posted on the Kean Ocean page is likely to be more familiar with the details of the Kean Ocean guide sheets and course offerings.
HOW DO I CONTACT MY KEAN PROFESSORS?
All professors are required to include their contact information on their syllabi, which they must distribute to you at the first class meetings of your courses with them. If your professor has not included this information on his or her syllabus (or has not distributed a syllabus at all), report the omission to the resident Kean Ocean academic adviser for the department offering the course. The adviser will either remedy the problem himself or herself or report the problem to the chairperson or director of the department, who will then remedy the problem and connect you with your professor. WHY IS KEANWISE NOT ALLOWING ME TO REGISTER?
A variety of blocks can prevent you from registering. Advisement and accounting blocks are the most common. To have your academic (departmental) block removed, contact your academic (departmental) advisor. To have an accounting block remove, you will need to settle whatever outstanding debt you have for tuition, fees or fines. Click here for how to do so.
HOW DO I REGISTER FOR OCC CLASSES AS A KEAN STUDENT?
You may register for OCC classes through OCC’s Ocean Cruiser system. If you are not already an established user of this system, go to the OCC office of records on the middle floor of the OCC Administration building and fill out the necessary forms to become established. Remember that once you are a Kean student, you must have any OCC courses you take approved by your Kean academic advisor. You must have your advisor sign a special form authorizing OCC course work, and you must file the approved form with the Kean Ocean administrative office in room 10 on the bottom floor of the OCC Library building. The form is entitled “Authorization to Take Courses at Ocean County College” and it has four copies. The bottom (yellow) one is for your records. The top three go to the Kean Ocean administrative office.
HOW DO I GET THE OCC COURSES I TAKE AS A KEAN STUDENT CREDITED TO MY KEAN DEGREE?
Once you are admitted to Kean, you must obtain approval from your academic (department) adviser before you take any OCC courses for your Kean degree. This approval is obtained by a form (entitled “Authorization to Take Courses at Ocean County College”) that you and your adviser must sign and that you must submit to the Kean Ocean office. The form ensures that your OCC credits will be accepted by Kean. It also includes a statement authorizing OCC to send a transcript of your OCC courses once they are completed. Once each semester (usually around the middle of the semester), OCC sends a large batch of such transcripts to Kean. You may also make a direct transcript request of your own to OCC.
HOW CAN I GET AN OVERLOAD FOR A KEAN CLASS?
Each academic department has its own procedure and policy for granting overloads to students. Check with the chairperson or academic advisor for the department offering the course you are seeking to enter. See advisement Web page. Note that while an overload authorization guarantees you a seat in the class, it may be time sensitive. That is, it may expire if you do not register for the class by a certain date. Be sure to know whether your overload has an expiration date or not. Please also note that Kean personnel have no authority to grant overloads or any other sort of registration permission for OCC courses.
HOW DO I REGISTER FOR AN OVERLOAD IN A KEAN CLASS?
Once an overload permission is entered into KeanWISE for you, you must log in to KeanWISE and register for your course using the special link identified for this purpose: “Register for closed sections (with overload authorization).” If you attempt to use the link for regular registration (that is, non-overload registration), the system will refuse your request for the closed course.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT MY KEAN TUITION IS AND WHEN I MUST PAY IT BEFORE I LOSE MY SCHEDULE?
In general, students who register for classes during the advance registration period are emailed bills specifying what they owe and when they must pay it. Students registering after the early registration period must discover their bill and due dates through KeanWISE (by logging in and clicking on the appropriate link). Failure to pay tuition by a due date results in the cancellation of your registration. See the Web site for Student Accounting for more detail. Note that once lost, a seat in a class is likely to be taken quickly by another student. You are not entitled to reclaim the seat, and you may well find yourself closed out of the class once it has filled to capacity.
HOW CAN I PAY MY TUITION?
You may pay your tuition by mailing or presenting a check either to the Office of Student Accounting in Union or the Kean Ocean administrative office in room 10 of the OCC library. You may also charge your tuition (in whole or according to a payment plan) by using the TMS option described on the Student Accounting Web site. Note that TMS charges a percentage fee for the use of a credit card to pay your tuition.
CAN I HAVE MY KEAN FINANCIAL AID AWARD COVER THE COST OF ANY OCC COURSES I MUST ALSO TAKE?
Yes. Kean and OCC use a consortium agreement to share the financial aid (except for STARS and TAG money). Note, however, that there are important restrictions and procedures that must be observed for this arrangement. See Kean OCC Students Web page.
HOW DO I TRANSFER MY STARS OR TAG AWARDS AND OTHER FINANCIAL AID TO KEAN?
First, it is important to note that STARS scholarships do NOT automatically transfer to any four-year school. Recipients of STARS scholarships at a county college must apply for a STARS II scholarship. Consult with your STARS counselor at OCC for more information. You may also consult the Web site of the Higher Education Student Assistance Authority. Should you be awarded STARS II money-or TAG money-for your Kean course work, you should also know that there are significant conditions attached to eligibility for that money. Transferring any form of financial aid to Kean requires that you add Kean to your FAFSA form, which you may do at www.fafsa.ed.gov . Note that there are deadlines for filing your FAFSA form. These deadlines are included on the university’s academic calendar, which is posted on the registrar’s site. You should also check the many links for financial aid forms, policies, and procedures that are included on your KeanWISE menu. And you should consult the Web site for the Kean Office of Financial Aid, especially its FAQ page and its special page for Kean Ocean students.
CAN I USE STARS OR TAG GRANTS TO PAY FOR OCC COURSES WHEN I AM A KEAN STUDENT?

HOW DO I USE MY UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFIT FOR FREE COURSE WORK?
Obtain a voucher from the state office of unemployment insurance. It must be made out to Kean University for Kean courses. (A separate voucher must be obtained and made out to OCC for OCC courses.) Present the voucher to the Kean Ocean administrative office in room 10 of the OCC library when you register. Note that under state law, you may not register for classes using these vouchers until after registration for all other students has ended. The purpose of the law granting you the privilege of taking classes without cost is to utilize empty seats that are certain to remain empty without your taking them. You may not use the voucher to obtain a seat in competition with regularly paying or financing students. Nor may you use the voucher to obtain a seat on an overload basis for a closed class. The law specifically prohibits such use of the voucher.

Books for Kean classes at Ocean are sold at the OCC book store. Books for Kean classes in Union are sold at the Barnes & Noble store on the Union campus.

HOW DO I WITHDRAW FROM A KEAN CLASS?
You may withdraw from class by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or by filling out a paper form at the Kean Ocean office in room 10 of the OCC library. Note that there are deadlines for withdrawing from a class and that Kean’s deadlines and procedures are different from those of OCC.
