Upward Bound- Kean University
Kean University’s College of Natural Applied and Health Sciences offers an intensive Saturday and summer six week residential program for students beginning in the 9th grade. The Upward Bound Project is one of the eight Federal TRIO Programs designed to identify and provide students from low income families and students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree. The goal of Upward Bound is increase the rate at which participants complete high school and enroll and graduate from college in four years
Eligible students are 9th and 10th grades who attend public schools in East Orange, Elizabeth. Each student must be on track and enrolled in college preparatory math. Each student must meet the Federal TRIO Program guidelines.
Program tuition is sponsored by the US Department of Education, and Kean University.
The purpose of the program is to provide the skills and motivation necessary to, enroll and graduate from college in a 4 year time frame.
Program activities will be held on the Kean University campus located in Union, NJ and the target high schools. The academic component is held during the months of September-May. The summer residential component will be held during the months of June -August.
There are 24 Saturdays during the academic year and a six week residential component during the summer.
The academic year and Saturday classes will include courses in math, science,science labs, foreign language, literature, corporate mentoring, and STEM research with university faculty, tutoring, SAT, NJ HSPA preparation and financial literacy. Participants are provided college/university tours, parent/student financial aid workshops, career workshops and cultural enrichment activities, along with group, individual and career counseling. Assistance with the college application process including college and SAT fee waivers are available for eligible participants.
Classes are taught by Kean University administration, faculty, professional staff, and professionals from the public and corporate sector. Students participate in the program until they graduate from high school.

Completed applications will be reviewed by the Upward Bound Admissions Committee. Applicants who the Upward Bound Admissions Committee recommends will be contacted for a personal interview with their parent (s) or legal guardian. The applicant will be notified in writing of their acceptance three weeks after the interview.
Accepted participants and their parents and/or primary care giver must attend a mandatory orientation to understand the expectations and requirements of the program. Completed applications must be received on or before October 1 of each year.
