Welcome Week Mission Statement

The mission of the Welcome Week Steering Committee is to coordinate student programs and activities that will welcome Kean University residential and commuter students to campus life and a new academic year. The committee will also work to foster a sense of responsibility and commitment throughout the entire University community to take part in a unified effort to welcome new and returning students.

  • to provide access to information and resources that will promote personal and academic success, wellness and responsible decision-making;
  • to provide opportunities for meaningful interaction that will build and maintain relationships between students, faculty, staff and administrators; and

First-Year and Transfer Student Move-In

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. - Residence Halls

Move-ins will take place on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. through Downs Hall. Please enter the campus via the Green Lane entrance and park any vehicles in the Vaughn-Eames parking lot. Students with last names that begin with M - Z will be permitted to move-in from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students with the last names that begin with A - L will be permitted to move-in from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Office of Residential Student Services strongly encourages students to bring hand-trucks for move-ins. Cotton Candy, Hot Dogs and Snow Cones

11 a.m. to 5 p.m. - Dougall Hall Patio

The Office of Residential Student Services has arranged for food vendors to distribute cotton candy, hot dogs and snow cones during first-year and transfer student move-ins on the Dougall Hall Patio. There is no charge for the food and snacks.

University Center Game Room Open

12 noon to 6 p.m. - University Center Game Room

The University Center Game Room will be open from 12 noon to 6 p.m. The University Center Game Room includes pool/billiard tables, ping pong, air hockey, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation Connect and more. Dinner

4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. - Upperclass Dining Hall

Dinner will be served from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Upperclass Residence Hall Dining Hall. The Dining Hall is an all-you-care-to-eat dining facility. Resident students must use their Kean University student ID card to gain entry.

Resident Floor Meetings

6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. - Respective Residence Hall Floors

All residents are required to attend their first floor meeting of the semester with their Resident Assistants (RAs). Information regarding Welcome Week, Kean University's polices and procedures and community standards expectations will be shared. The floor meetings will also provide a brief opportunity for the residents on each floor to get to know one another.

The Office of Residential Student Services Game Rooms in the New Freshman Residence Hall (NFRH) and the New Upperclass Residence Hall (NURH) will be open from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. for resident students. All students must use their Kean University student ID cards to enter the game room. The game rooms consist of pool/billiard tables, ping pong, large flat screen TVs and more.

Welcome Party

9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. - Downs Hall

Spend the first night on campus getting to know your classmates. The School of General Studies is hosting the Welcome Party with the General Education Mentors (GEMs). Tickets required. Tickets are FREE! for students with a valid KUID. Limit one ticket per ID. Music will be provided by DJ Nix-in-the-Mix. The party begins at 9:30 p.m. at 1 a.m. Doors close at 11:30 p.m. Metal detectors will be in use. No hats or headgear will be permitted. No re-entry.

The shuttle frequents local food markets, department stores and train stations. The shuttle will pick passengers up at Kean University at the Wilkins Theatre Shuttle Stop.

Which residence hall will prevail? Residence hall competitions include basketball, water balloon toss, volleyball, sack race, billiards, three-legged races and tug-of-war. Residents will represent their respective residence halls against the others in a tournament style competition. Pre-registration is required. The Student Social Justice Coalition presents, “The Lorax”, a classic Dr. Seuss tale brought to life through film.  A discussion on the film to follow.  Synopsis: A 12-year-old boy searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams.  To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world.  It chronicles the plight of the environment and the Lorax, who speaks for the trees against the greedy Once-ler.

Grab your swimsuits and join us for some fun! Student Organization is hosting a bust trip to Mountain Creek Waterpark in Vernon, NJ. The bus will depart the Wilkins Theatre bus stop at 9:30 a.m. Tickets required - tickets go on sale Tuesday, August 28, 2012, at the Wilkins Theatre Box Office for $5. Limit one ticket per KUID. Lunch is included at the waterpark with your ticket. Join the Center for Leadership and Service on a trip to the Community Foodbank of New Jersey, New Jersey's largest food pantry, located in Hillside, NJ. Participants will sort food for distribution to various soup kitchens and distribution centers throughout the entire state. A shuttle will depart from the Vaughn-Eames Parking Lot near the security booth at 11 a.m. SHARP!. Participants will be eligible for 2 hours of community service.
