Kean University is proud to provide a number of services to nonprofit organizations in the community.

The Office of Community and Disability Services
Director Roye Ann Hargrove
(908) 737-5150

The Office of Community and Disability Services provides community service opportunities and "one-stop" scheduling, event planning, and conference coordination to affiliated and non-affiliated clients for all on-campus events. The office works with institutions and constituencies such as private and public agencies, faculty and staff, current and prospective students and parents, alumni and other friends, as well as the general public.

Service Learning
http://www.kean.edu/~serlearn

The Service Learning program provides a unique opportunity for students to engage in course-related service activities in a wide range of community and not-for-profit agencies. Service Learning courses are offered among a number of disciplines, and students are required to give forty hours of service over the course of a semester. The service experience will be integrated in various ways into the course content. Students earn one credit for the time devoted to community service.

Community partners are the cornerstone of Service Learning at Kean University. These nonprofit organizations, agencies, and programs provide the vital link in making that which is learned in the classroom relevant to real world problems and real world needs. To date, we have formed partnerships with over 100 community-based agencies, resulting in an impressive range of available Service Learning opportunities. But there is always room for more.

Cooperative Education

The Cooperative Education program allows for professional experience outside the classroom and gives students firsthand knowledge of companies, community organizations, not-for-profit agencies, and other off-campus placements. The program combines academic study with realistic, career-related work experience. Students earn academic credit while working in approved employment directly related to their majors. Supervised by employers and advised by faculty members, the approved placements may be full- or part-time, paying or non-paying, and credits earned may vary depending on the major. The program is open to juniors and seniors in selected majors.

The Holocaust Resource Center is a joint initiative between the University and the Holocaust Resource Foundation, a private philanthropic organization. The Center collects and disseminates knowledge of the Holocaust to commemorate and strengthen education about the Holocaust.

The Center offers an annual free lecture series and a tuition-free graduate course for teachers called "Teaching the Holocaust." As enrollment in the course increased, it expanded from the University to various local school districts to allow for greater teacher preparation. The Center also offers a follow-up course called "Teaching Prejudice Reduction." Thousands of teachers have participated in the project. The Center's educational programs serve as a resource for many Kean University students and members of the community.

A Virtual Small Business Incubator for Small Business Development and Youth Entrepreneurship.
A Family Day Care Center and Mentorship Program to address daycare services.
A Fast Track Permit Program that is designed to encourage reinvestment in the Elizabethport area.

The COPC is a collaborative relationship among the Gateway Institute, the City of Elizabeth, and the Elizabethport Community. It is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The Alliance has helped to produce a long-range strategic plan to prepare Union County for economic and social progress. It has been the catalyst in shaping a new county transportation system, and it has helped to take action to ensure the long-term vitality of the state's international seaport and airport.
