Spanish Certification Information


Students planning to pursue an initial Certification in Spanish at Kean University should follow the steps outlined below. 

Students planning to acquire a secondary certification in Spanish should consult the following page for Instructions:

STEP 1: All students seeking initial certification through Kean University Education Programs must pass the Praxis Core Exams before being admitted officially into specific programs--see link to register for this series of tests.  DO NOT DELAY THE TAKING AND PASSING OF THESE TESTS SINCE THIS CAN DELAY YOUR PROGRESS TOWARDS GRADUATION.

Extra time for Spanish Speakers on Praxis Exam

The Praxis Core test (Core Academic Skills for Educators Test) is used as an entrance exam for all elementary, middle and secondary education majors. The Praxis Core tests students' abilities in the areas of mathematics, reading, and writing. Passing this test is one of the requirements that must be met in order to be Declared into any program in the College of Education.  Please have your scores sent to Kean University--you can do this during the registration process--our code is 2517.  Also you must have your scores forwarded to the NJ Department of Education--their code is R7666.  In addition, you must forward a hard copy of your passing scores to the Teaching Performance Center in preparation for Internship Placement.  Your social security number is required to fill out this form.

The College of Education provides resources and support to help you prepare for this test--please visit the Praxis Resource Center on the third floor of Hennings to obtain preparation materials and learn of other resources to help you pass these tests.

STEP 2:  Once you pass the Praxis Core Exams you will need to make application to your initial certification program.  If that program is K-12 Teacher Certification in Spanish gather the information in the list below and present them to your assigned adviser. NON-SPANISH CERT MAJORS SHOULD CONSULT THEIR INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMS FOR APPLICATION PROCESS. Reminder: students planning to major in K-12 Teacher Certification in Spanish must be in good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Submit the following:

  1. Student-signed Application for Admission (Available in Secondary Ed Department Office, Hutchinson 334D)
  2. Essay – Personal Philosophy of Education
  3. Transcript(s) from all previous schools (transfer students)
  4. Transfer Evaluation Guide Sheet (transfer students)
  5. Two Professional Letters of Recommendation addressed to: MSE Department, Kean University, 1000 Morris Ave., Union, NJ 07083, Attn: Dr. Jerry Weiner)
  6. Evidence of a passing score on each of the three parts of the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Test.
  7. When you have collected all the items listed above, present them to Dr. Weiner for an entrance interview.

STEP 3: Once admitted as a declared major you will make application for Field Experience Placement, EMSE 3801--Pre-Professional field (junior field) first--follow instructions at the following site:
