You are eligible to be considered for admission to the EEO program if your records
do not qualify for regular admission. The program provides Developmental Studies
courses in a supportive environment that begins during a six-week pre-freshman
summer program. Many students who are admitted to this program may qualify to
receive additional financial aid through the New Jersey State EOF Program.
Candidates for EEO transfer admission must appear for an interview with the EEO
Program's Transfer Coordinator for an assessment of the student's financial eligibility
and overall compatibility with the program's services. You must also complete
the Free Application for Federal Aid and a Transfer Aid Form for the proper channeling
of financial aid. If you're accepted, you'll be required to attend an orientation
program for transfer students. You will also be assigned an EEO counselor who
is a specialist in the school of your major.
Academic Advisement
Academic Advisement is one area of counseling in which professionals will help
you in the selection of required general education courses and a major field of
study. You must meet with your counselor to plan and select your courses prior
to registration to ensure that you are meeting the prerequisite course of study
for your major. Your past performance, work schedule and academic strengths and
weaknesses are all taken into account during this process.
Affective Education
The Affective Education program sponsors group activities, workshops and discussions
designed to help student develop positive self-concepts and foster feelings of
security and self-motivation. Emphasis is placed on identifying and developing
leadership skills and reinforcing problem-solving techniques.
Early Career Planning
Early Career Planning is an organized system through which EEO students receive
educational, social and occupational information necessary for appropriate career
planning and decision-making. You will be introduced to various fields of study
by faculty representatives of academic departments, personnel specialists, professionals
actually working in careers in which students are interested, as well as EEO program
personnel. Workshops on self-motivation, decision-making, interview preparation,
job hunting techniques, resume writing and career exploration are held. A Career
Information Center in the EEO Office offers information on labor trends and a
wealth of current literature and materials on career opportunities.
Counseling and Peer Counseling
Counseling is another major component of the EEO Program. Each student is assigned
a counselor throughout the years that he or she is at Kean. Each counselor is
a trained professional who provides the atmosphere and relationship in which you
can discuss, identify and make choices for the solution of personal concerns.
Counselors assist you in identifying your strengths and weaknesses and will help
you obtain additional support services within or outside the University. This
process may occasionally involve the counselor assisting you in making a smooth
transition into a relationship with others who have expertise in your areas of
concern. Counseling may take place through group activities, private conferences
and (sometimes if necessary) through brief telephone or visitation contacts when
follow-up information is required.
The EEO Program also has a Peer Counseling Program in which upper-class students
are trained to assist students in their academic and social adjustment to college
life.
Developmental Studies
In order to help you develop your academic skills, during your first summer session
you will be enrolled in courses in developmental reading and study skills, writing,
mathematics, science concepts and English as a Second Language, depending on your
individual needs. Your placement in the courses you take depends on how you perform
on the New Jersey College Basic Skills Placement Test. Students whose native language
is not English are given the English as a Second Language battery of tests. During
your initial summer session, and as long as you are enrolled in developmental
courses, your progress will be closely monitored by a highly developed evaluation
process. Through a close network of program administrators, instructors, counselors,
tutors and resident assistants, your performance and attendance will be appraised,
recorded and reported. Each evaluation report will become a vital tool for immediate
administrative and/or counseling follow-up. This process will permit the early
identification and correction of any difficulties that might arise before they
can seriously impede your progress.
EEO Learning Assistance Center
The EEO Learning Assistance Center is an integral academic component of support
to EEO students as they strengthen their academic skills. The center offers services
such as tutoring, supplemental instruction, supervised study sessions and other
forms of learning assistance. These services are available in small groups, one-to-one
and on a drop-in basis with hours conducive to the day or evening student's schedule.
Students may request tutoring on their own, or be referred by an instructor or
a counselor. Freshmen who have difficulty completing their developmental course
work are required to attend mandatory supervised small group sessions offered
in the academic area(s) of weakness.
In addition to tutoring, the EEO Learning Assistance Center also offers Academic
Reinforcement and Academic Enrichment Activities which include workshops, seminars
and non-credit courses designed to strengthen your college survival skills. Selective
activities focus on critical thinking skills, effective note taking and listening
skills, time management, test-taking strategies and writing effective term papers.
Other Features
Other Special Features include EEO-sponsored achievement motivation seminars,
guest lecturers, academic field trips to museums, planetariums and theaters. Group
dynamic sessions, human sexuality clinics and social activities are also provided
for EEO participants. The program sponsors its own honor society, Epsilon Epsilon
Omega, the Honors List and a 4.0 Club, through which the academic achievement
of participants is recognized and strongly encouraged.
