Applying for Financial Aid
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the only application
used to apply for need based financial aid for state and federal programs.
The FAFSA can be filed electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov or with the paper application. To request an application for FAFSA or for more information,
call 1-800-4FEDAID. The Kean University priority deadline for filing the FAFSA
is March 15 th for the full academic year and by November 1 st for the spring term. The earlier you file your application the sooner you will receive notice of your eligibility for financial aid. Applications received by the deadline date will receive maximum consideration for all aid programs for which they are eligible. For additional information and other application deadline, make sure you check the KeanWISE website.
FAFSA on the Web
Both first-time FAFSA and Renewal FAFSA applicants are urged to file their FAFSA on the Web at www.fafsa.ed.gov Filing your FAFSA on the Web is easier, faster and a more accurate way to submit your application. You need to list
Kean University on the FAFSA and enter our federal ID number 002622 in order for the Financial Aid Office to receive it electronically. |

The Student Aid Report
After you have filed an FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA, the federal processing center will mail you a Student Aid Report (SAR) within four weeks. This document contains a summary of all information listed on the FAFSA. It should be kept as an official receipt and should be retained by the student for record keeping.
The U.S. Department of Education will also report a student's Expected
Family Contribution (EFC) on the SAR. Review Part 2 of the SAR and make any corrections and mail the form to the federal central processing center. The corrected information will be transmitted electronically to the Kean University Office of Financial Aid and a revised SAR will be sent to the student. If you do not receive an original or corrected SAR, you should call the Federal Student
Aid Information Center at (800) 433-3243.
The Verification Process
Approximately four out of every 10 applications are selected by the U.S. Department of Education or the University to confirm, or validate, information listed on the FAFSA. The verification process will require selected applicants to provide financial documents at the request of the KU Office of Financial Aid.
The additional documents include, but may not be limited to, the student's and parents' federal tax returns, a verification worksheet and other supporting documents. After these documents are received, your financial aid eligibility
will be finalized. New students selected for verification will receive an estimated award notice before the verification process is completed. After the documents have been reviewed, awards will be finalized and possibly adjusted before the
aid funds are credited to student accounts. Continuing students selected for verification must submit requested documents to the Office of Financial Aid before receiving notice of their financial aid awards. How
Financial Aid Eligibility is Determined
The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) reported on a student's Student Aid Report (SAR) is used by the University to determine eligibility for the amount
and types of financial aid a student may receive. The EFC is subtracted from
the cost of education assigned to an applicant and the result is a student's eligibility for financial aid. The
Kean University Award Letter
Offers of financial aid are sent to students in a Kean University Award Letter after a full review of an application has been made. The award letter details
the types and amounts of financial aid that you are eligible to receive during
the 2006-2007 academic year. Review your award letter carefully and read
the conditions and requirements that may apply. Acceptance of the financial
aid offer is not required. If you wish to reduce or decline an offer of a loan or
work-study, or to report an award of a private scholarship, complete the forms enclosed with your award letter and return it to the Office of Financial Aid. Special Circumstances
Students and their families may report special circumstances that may affect their ability to contribute toward the cost of education. After reviewing the
Kean University offer of financial aid, a student or parent may need to report, with appropriate documentation, significant changes in the family's financial situation since the FAFSA was filed. The special circumstances may include
loss of employment and/or benefits, major medical expenses not covered by insurance, the disability of an immediate family member, death of an immediate family member, or other unusual expenses of the student or family. You must request and complete a Special Circumstances form at the One Stop Service Center for consideration of your situation. You will receive a revised award
letter if adjustments are made to your original FAFSA information. |
