Creating Your Own Home Page

Information Technology. Campus School South 113

Steps involved in the creation of your Home Page

1. Create an account using the form "Turbo Account Request Form" at CSS-113
2. Activate the account by executing the script below
3.
Add your Home Page to the Home Pages index

Before executing the script ~wwwocis/WWW/Public/homepage.web, please understand what it does. It will create a basic homepage which will be located in your user directory on the Turbo system.

To use the script:

  1. You must have a current Turbo account. If you don't have an account, go to CSS-113 (Campus School South, room 113) and fill out the form labeled "Turbo Account Request Form".
    Download free Acrobat Reader
  2. Make a connection to Turbo, or telnet to turbo.kean.edu from here
  3. Log in to Turbo as you normally would with your correct User ID and password
  4. At the turbo prompt, type (or copy and paste):
    ~wwwocis/WWW/Public/homepage.web

This will prompt you for simple answers that will be used to create your home page. Next go up one directory by typing cd .. then type chmod 755 "USERID" this will give you rights to view your page via a(n) IE or netscape browser.

Welcome.html
A main page "Welcome.html" will be automatically created. This is the page that opens when you type: www.kean.edu/~YourDirectory.
For your directory to work automatically, do not rename this page, you can edit and update it as you need. If you create or have a page you want to use as your main page, rename that page "Welcome.html".

Troubleshooting
If your directory is not working properly, e.g., it displays a list of files instead of opening your home page, probably your main page is not named "Welcome.html". See note above.

Indexing
Once this is all completed, to link your Home Page to the Home Pages index, use the Home Page Inclusion Request Form online.
