Clearly, foreign language proficiency is essential for a successful career in the field of international affairs. In order to provide students with additional opportunity to improve foreign language proficiency, the Institute encourages and supports student participation in intensive or immersion programs in the U.S and abroad.

PROGRAMS IN THE U.S.
Middlebury College

The Language Schools at Middlebury College offer 7 and 9 week summer
immersion programs in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian,
Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Students sign a "Language
Pledge", a formal commitment to speak, listen, read and write in their
language of study as the only means of communication for the entire
summer session.

SUNY New Paltz

The summer program at the Language Immersion Institute at the State
University of New York at New Paltz provides up to 4 weeks of
instruction in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian,
Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish, and Yiddish. The
sessions provide close to 100 hours of classroom instruction based on a
communicative approach.

PROGRAMS ABROAD
Cultural Experiences Abroad (CEA)

CEA coordinates academic semester and summer language immersion
programs at Vertias University in Costa Rica, the University of Aix-
Marseille, the University of Burgundy, the University of Grenoble, and
the Sorbonne in France, the University of Guadalajara in Mexico, and
the University of Alcala, the University of Alicante, the University of
Barcelona, the University of Granada, the University of Madrid, and the
University of Seville in Spain. In addition to being immersed in these
countries, students spend 4 hours per day in language courses.

Languages Abroad

Languages Abroad sends students to study in over 50 countries and in 30
different languages, including Arabic, Afrikaans, Italian, Portuguese,
Greek, Russian, and Spanish. Programs are available year-round and vary
in length from one to 36 weeks. Students may take up to 6 hours of
daily language instruction.

SUNY New Paltz

In addition to its U.S.-based courses, SUNY New Paltz also offers
immersion programs in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, France,
Italy, Mexico, and Spain. Courses run from 2 to 4 weeks, usually
involving 4-5 hours of class time per day, 5 days a week.

international language schools. A directory allows one to search by
language and country for accredited programs and institutions.
