In 2003, Kean University received a second Congressional appropriation to prepare for a career in Foreign Service and diplomacy by organizing short-term real or simulated international learning experiences.

With this grant, the Institute for Foreign Service and Diplomacy has established International Experience Modules (IEMs) to help students develop cultural, social, linguistic, political and academic competencies, without having to commit a full semester to do so. Instead, the Institute will sponsor short-term travel by selected students to foreign countries, or, as an alternative, will arrange for students to participate in simulated international experiences.
