Kean Honors Robert W. Cockren, Esq., at 11th Annual Gala

Image 01 If you have ever wondered about what it would be like to visit Paris in the spring, then Thursday, June 5, was your night to enjoy this wonderful experience in all of its luster and elegance – only 3,000 miles closer in Harwood Arena. For more than 700 patrons, the 11th Annual Kean University Gala, honoring Robert W. Cockren, Esq., more than lived up to the flamboyant and boisterous, yet elegant expectations set forth by its Moulin Rouge theme. More importantly, it garnered more than $400,000 that will go toward supporting Transforming Lives: The Campaign for Kean University. As past chair and current member of the Board of Trustees, Cockren has played a significant role in the unprecedented growth and prosperity that has taken place throughout Kean in recent years. Additionally, through his work with the Rummel Foundation, Cockren has transformed the lives of dozens of deserving students through scholarships. President Dawood Farahi expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the ongoing success. “We are committed to being the most affordable and most diverse four-year university in the state,” said Farahi. “When people come to Kean, they are amazed by the campus, the quality of our programs and our students. A great deal of the credit goes to people in this room who have dreamed of things that a few short years ago could only be described as fantasy. But through hard work and persistence, we now have a magnificent university.”

Occupational Therapy Courses Offer Mutual Benefit to Community and Students

Image 01Pictured are graduate students from the Department of Occupational Therapy who, under the supervision of a licensed occupational therapist, recently offered a series of educational courses for people with differing abilities ranging in age from 13 and up. Nearly 50 individuals from the surrounding community and local support centers took advantage of free and low-cost courses in healthy living, aging in place, basic computer skills and back-to-school basics. The program provided an opportunity for guests who are considering higher education to visit Kean and get a glimpse of the social, personal and academic elements of campus and college life, and taught new skills for the development of a better quality of life. The series was equally beneficial to aspiring OT’s, as they gained exposure to the field through firsthand professional experience working with individuals of different abilities and ages. “Our recent course offerings were an expansion of our existing program that focused solely on individuals with mental illness,” said Dr. Laurie Knis Mattews, associate professor and acting OT program director. “We look forward to further developing our ongoing efforts to provide quality services to the community and practical experience for our students.”
