ID 1800: The Holocaust, Genocide, and Modern Humanity

Four sections of ID 1800 to be offered during fall 2008 semester No subject generates more controversy and demands more attention than the subject of genocide. Genocide – the deliberate attempt by the highest levels of government to eliminate an entire group of people – is a uniquely modern phenomenon, implicating intellectuals and other professionals, in addition to political leaders.

This course will examine testimonies, documentary films and case studies on genocide in Asia, Africa and the United States, as well as on the Holocaust, the paradigmatic genocide of the 20th century.

We will also consider the civilized world’s obligation and scope for preventing genocide in the 21st century. Discussions will include the existence of dissent, resistance and attempts at rescue while genocide was in progress, the quest for justice and the question of forgiveness after the event, and the premise that the humanities, including this course, can humanize and nurture tolerant behavior. The course will include a trip to the U. S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Students should be advised that, due to limited space, enrollment is only on a first-come, first-served basis. The course can serve as a valuable free elective for all students, a major elective for History majors, and an additional cognate requirement for Elementary Education majors in the category “Elective from the Humanities, Social or Natural Sciences.” Click here to view class schedules.

Twelve teachers from the Rahway, Keansburg, Newark, and Hillside, N.J., school districts will engage in an intensive study of writing theory and practice, with the goal of improving writing instruction in their respective schools. Kean faculty members will guide participants’ work, offering coaching and mentoring in writing pedagogy, technological tools for writing and learning, sheltered instruction, teacher inquiry, and writing to learn theory. NWP staff for the event include Dr. Linda Best, who serves as project director and coach; Dr. Mark Sutton, an instructor and coach; Dr. Charles Nelson, a technology liaison and coach; Dr. Gail Verdi, a facilitator and coach; and Erica Holan, instructor and coach–in–training.

Dr. Zandra Gratz Named Distinguished Teacher by Alpha Kappa

Image 01 Pictured (left to right) are Dr. Zandra Gratz, professor in the Department of Psychology; Dr. Suzanne Bousquet, chair of the Department of Psychology; and Dr. José Sánchez, chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Gratz received the Distinguished Teacher Award in recognition of excellence in classroom instruction and her unwavering support of Alpha Kappa, Kean’s chapter of the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society for nontraditional adult students.

“The students are the ones who deserve an award. I am always amazed at their devotion and perseverance as they balance school, work and family,” said Gratz. “I have a job in which no two days are the same, where I get to talk about issues that are important (yes, even statistics), work with colleagues who serve as both mentors and friends, and where I continue to learn, everyday. To get an award is like the icing on a cake.”

Alpha Sigma Lambda aims to recognize the special achievements of adults who accomplish academic excellence while facing competing interests of home and work. “Nontraditional adult students are a particularly important segment of Kean’s student body,” said faculty advisor Sánchez. “Highly dedicated instructors such as Dr. Gratz are a fitting compliment.”

There are over 300 chartered chapters throughout the United States, which bring together outstanding students and faculty, and also offers each individual an exposure to interests other than her or his own. Bousquet is the adviser for the national organization. For more information, visit http://www.alphasigmalambda.org/.
