Kean University Welcomes Occupational Therapy Graduate Students
Nearly 30 new graduate students joined the Kean University family at an evening event held in Kean Hall on June 17. The evening was hosted by acting department chair and associate professor, Dr. Laurie Knis-Matthews, where faculty in the department welcomed the newest members of the incoming class of future occupational therapists. While approximately 200 applicants entered the rigorous admissions process this year, only 12 dual-degree and 23 master’s degree students were ultimately accepted into the program.
Sonia Moorehead, the department’s director of admissions, coordinated the second annual event, where new students and their families came to campus for their first official campus event. Second- and third-year occupational therapy students also attended, sharing stories and answering questions from their own experiences of coursework, fieldwork, and campus life. “The students hit the ground running on the first day of classes,” said assistant professor Mara Cohen. “This event is a great opportunity for our new students and their families to ease into life at Kean before the semester begins. They have the chance to meet the faculty and each other, as well as to learn from current students what they can expect during the program.”

A research paper, Use of GIS to Examine Winter Fog Occurrences, prepared by Dr. Paul J. Croft, a professor of meteorology, and recent Kean graduate Braden Ward, a meteorology major and Phi Kappa Phi Award winner, has been accepted and published online by the National Weather Association's Electronic Journal of Operational Meteorology (see http://www.nwas.org/ej/index.php). The research was prepared to provide guidance to forecasters to identify methods of discerning the distribution of fog according to weather patterns. This information can then be used to predict dense fog and its regional coverage in the New Jersey metropolitan area.
