Students in the Educator of Individuals with Disabilities program will prepare to teach individuals with disabilities who are cognitively impaired, emotionally disturbed, specific learning disabled and physically/multiply disabled. Graduates of the program will qualify for the Teacher of the Handicapped certificate which is valid for grades K-12. Students must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher for admission to the major and for continuation and graduation from the program. Students must also achieve a grade of “B-” in Eng 1030, MATH 1000, SPED 2051, SPED 2120 (Sophomore Field), and in one of the following courses – SPED 2154, SPED 2155, SPED 2156, SPED 2157 before admission to the major is considered. Teacher certification requirements include the satisfactory completion of field experiences in the sophomore and junior years as well as a full semester of student teaching is required during the senior year. Students may be interested in pursuing positions in public and private school teaching, extended employment settings, group homes, supervised apartments, programs for adults with disabilities and with private agencies serving the developmentally disabled.
