BOOT CAMP

Each August, Premiere Stages offers an intensive four-day workshop called Boot Camp for Kean Performance majors. Boot Camp allows Kean students the opportunity to work with leaders in the field in a concentrated, rigorous environment.

Past Boot Camp residencies have included:

  • Scene Study Intensive (with Tony Award-winning actor Norbert Leo Butz)
  • Preparing a NYC Showcase (with New York acting coach Ted Sluberski)
  • Acting for the Camera (with television director/producer Linda Laundra)
  • The Business of Theatre (with casting director Carol Hanzel)
  • Audition Intensive (with Broadway director Richard Sabellico)

STUDENT READINGS

The Kean Student Reading Series is a collaborative effort between Premiere Stages and the Kean University Theatre Department. Kean University students enrolled in Playwriting conclude their semester with public readings of the work created in class. Premiere Stages produces the readings and casts them from a pool of Kean acting majors and Equity professionals. Throughout the process, Premiere Stages brings in professional playwrights to serve as mentors and respondents to the students. A brief discussion with the audience follows each of the public readings.

Playwriting is taught by Premiere Stages’
Artistic Director, John Wooten.

Please check the Kean University Course Bulletin for more information.

BFA SHOWCASE

Premiere Stages collaborates with the Kean University Department of Theatre to produce the BFA Acting Showcase in New York every other January. The Showcase features Kean acting students who graduated the May prior to the Showcase or Kean acting students who are graduating the May following the Showcase.

Students are required to take or audit the Acting as a Profession course in the fall, leading up to the Showcase. Students are also required to develop an actor’s toolkit, which includes contrasting monologues, a professional headshot and resume, and a two-year business plan.

The Showcase is held in the Studio Theatre, located in the Theatre Row complex of theatres in mid-town Manhattan. Students have the opportunity to audition for industry professionals, including agents, casting directors and artistic directors.

Auditions for the BFA Showcase and taking the Acting as a Profession course are required. Please contact the Theatre Department for additional information and audition dates.

ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS and SCIENCES

Premiere Stages has solidified a partnership with the NY Chapter of the Academy of Television of Arts and Sciences to offer "Inside Television", an accredited class in which Kean arts majors interface with professionals in the field of television. Students visit the NY NATAS headquarters and gain practical knowledge from renowned speakers. Students are also afforded the opportunity to tour NYC television studios. Students who excel are recommended for internships with Academy affiliated networks.

Premiere Artists also partners with NY NATAS to offer a one-day intensive field trip across Manhattan for Premiere Stages summer interns. Interns visit and tour multiple locations and meet with leading artists in the fields of television and theatre. Tours have included visits to Lincoln Center, Madison Square Garden, Channel 11 Television, Music Choice and Soundtrack Studios.

Premiere Stages partners with the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences to present the Peter Ustinov Screenwriting Competition as part of the International Emmy Awards Conference, held every November in the Sofitel Hotel in New York City. Premiere Stages directs the reading of the competition winner and casts the event with a pool of Kean acting students and professional actors.
