Premiere Stages, the professional Equity Theatre Program at Kean University, offers a professional intern program for applicants who have an interest in pursuing a career in theatre arts. The program provides intense on-the-job training, weekly seminars, professional field trips, understudy opportunities and membership in the Equity Membership Candidacy Program (when applicable). The intern pool is comprised of primarily college students and second career oriented individuals; part-time internships may also be available to high school students. Internships are offered in numerous categories.

 
   
   
 

Summer – stipend or credit-earning internships
Stage Management

Interns assist Equity stage management staff and the director with the set up and running of rehearsals. During performances, interns work backstage assisting the production stage manager as needed. Stage Management interns are eligible to earn points in the Equity Membership Candidacy Program.

Production
Interns work in all production areas including carpentry, electrics, props, costumes, and sound. Interns work on running-crew for all performances. Interns should have experience in production but are not
required to have experience in all production areas. Duties include:
     • Assisting the technical director and set designer in the scene shop
     • Assisting the master electrician and lighting designer with the maintenance and
       implementation of electrics
     • Assisting the prop master with the rental, purchase, building, and maintenance of all props
     • Assisting the costume designer and shop manager with costume construction, purchase/rental,
       and maintenance

Artistic
Interns are selected to sharpen their skills in preparation for a job as an artistic director. Interns assist the producing artistic director and guest directors in rehearsals, assist the resident dramaturg with contextual research for program notes and lobby displays, and help coordinate staff and production meetings. Additional duties include assisting with budgeting, paperwork, personnel, public relations, special event coordination, and audience services.

Education/Outreach
Interns assist the Education Coordinator with the implementation of the Premiere Stages Education program, which includes the following components: Camp Premiere, Premiere School Time Residencies and the Musical Fun Series. Interns help devise curriculum, coordinate schedules, assist with workshops, coordinate child participation, interact with student participants, and assist with study guides and outreach projects for the main stage season.

Marketing/Box Office
Interns assist the Audience Services Coordinator and the Box Office Manager in developing and implementing marketing strategies. These include print, radio and online advertising, social networking initiatives, mailing list maintenance and online patron outreach. Computer / internet skills are essential. Other responsibilities include selling program ads, distributing printed marketing materials (posters / brochures) to the immediate community and communication with local media partners. Interns also assist the Box Office Manager by tracking complimentary tickets for cast and crew and working with box office staff to confirm and track ticket sales before performances.

 
   
   
 

     • Work strikes and tech rehearsals.
     • Attend production meetings.
     • Assist in other departments as needed.
     • Attend weekly summer seminars.
       Seminars are taught each Saturday morning by seasoned theatre professionals.

 
   
   
 

Literary Management (Spring)
Interns assist with all aspects of the Premiere Stages Play Festival, including organizing and evaluating submissions, scheduling and assisting with the John Golden and Student Readings and related rehearsals, interfacing with the Panel, assisting with casting, and corresponding with playwrights.

Management/Administration (Fall and Spring)
Interns assist with all aspects of Premiere Stages including assisting with the Premiere Stages Play Festival, the Premiere Play Factory, and the Premiere Artist Series. Interns also assist with planning, season implementation, casting, marketing, celebrity requirements, and university relations.

     • $150 per week stipend or college credit (number of college credits are determined by
        student’s institution of study)

Semester Interns

Program Dates
Summer Internships: June 16, 2010 - August 6, 2010
(some interns may stay through the NJ Premiere in early September)
Semester Internships: Fall and Spring Semesters

All materials must be received by March 31, 2010 for consideration for the Summer. Applications are accepted on an on-going basis for the Fall and Spring semesters. Selection into the program is highly competitive.
