Kean University to Honor Outback Steakhouse President
Paul Avery at Fifth Annual Kean University Gala

UNION, N.J. — Outback Steakhouse President Paul Avery will be honored at Kean University's fifth annual Gala on Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at 6:30 p.m. at The Atrium in West Orange, N.J. Avery is being recognized for his philanthropic contributions and professional success.

Born in Gloversville, N.Y., Avery was raised in Woodbridge, N.J., and graduated from Kean in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in management science. He entered the food service industry as a management trainee with the Steak & Ale Restaurant Company after graduation and quickly rose to the rank of regional supervisor. In 1989, Avery joined Outback Steakhouse as a managing partner in Melbourne, Fla. The chain consisted of just three locations at that time. One year later, Avery was named director of operations, and in 1997 he became president of the company. Under his leadership, Outback Steakhouse has expanded to more than 660 locations today.

Avery serves as chair and is a staunch supporter of Take Stock in Children, an organization that brings together citizens, school systems and various agencies to ensure the academic and personal success of children from low-income families. He is also active with the Boys and Girls Clubs and the United Cerebral Palsy Association. Additionally, Outback Steakhouse donated $8.5 million to the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against America, and on October 11, 2001, donated 100 percent of its sales for the day to victim relief efforts.

Proceeds from the Gala are used to fund merit scholarships and academic programs. For more information regarding tickets or table sponsorships at the fifth annual Kean University Gala, please call (800) 626-8097.
