Hey Kids, Kean Summer Youth Program Offers Fun for Your Brain!

UNION, N.J. – Kean University’s Office of Continuing and Professional Education is offering a series of four-day workshops for children as part of its Kean Kids: Summer Fun for Your Brain program, Mondays through Thursdays, August 4 through August 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 1000 Morris Avenue, Union, N.J.

Explore the biology and ecology of bugs at BUGSme. Open to children grades 3 through 7, the seminar will be conducted by Dr. Sylvio Codella, associate professor in Kean’s Department of Biology. This workshop will begin on August 4. Pre-registration is required for CEK 102, Section 090. The fee is $176.

Be brought DOWN2Earth to participate in field activities and discover the excitement of geology and meteorology, including satellite imaging. Open to children grades 3 through 7, DOWN2Earth will be conducted by Kathy Flormann, adjunct professor in Kean’s Department of Geology and Meteorology. This workshop will begin on August 11. Pre-registration is required for CEK 101, Section 09A. The fee is $176.

Learn how the FM transmitter works at the FM Transmitter Workshop. Dr. Kamal Shahrabi, chairperson of and professor in Kean’s Department of Technology, will teach attendees to use a personal computer to build an FM transmitter and how to broadcast over their own radio at home. Open to children grades 7 and 8, this workshop will begin on August 4. Pre-registration is required for CEK 108, Section 090. The fee, including transmitter materials, is $210.

Introduction to Chess will provide instruction on the basic rules of chess, the names of the game pieces and how the pieces move. Attendees will gain playing experience through practice. Open to children grades 3 through 7, this workshop will be held during the week of August 11 or August 18. Students must bring their own chessboard and chessmen. Pre-registration is required for CEK 105, Section 090. The fee is $176 for each four-day session.

Participate in radio- and television-production projects like those on your favorite stations and channels, at Kean Kids News. Taught by Dr. Scott McHugh, assistant professor in Kean’s Department of Communication, this seminar is open to children grades 3 through 7. This workshop will begin on August 18. Pre-registration is required for CEK 107, Section 090. The fee is $176.

Keyboard Kids (Piano for Kids) will provide instruction on proper piano techniques through hands-on participation. Kathleen McGee-Daly, adjunct professor in Kean’s Department of Music, will teach attendees an introductory survey of music fundamentals, including rhythmic notation and note reading. Students must bring their own electric keyboard. Open to children grades 3 through 7, this workshop will be held during the week of August 4 or August 11. Pre-registration is required for CEK 106, Sections 090 and 09A. The fee is $176 for each four-day session.

On the last day of each course, participants will receive a certificate of completion. A supervised lunch break will be offered each day, and children should bring their own meal.
