Cleveland Signstage Theatre presents Matilda at Kean University

UNION, N.J. – – Cleveland Signstage Theatre will present its unique deaf-theatre adaptation of Matilda, the best-selling children’s book by Roald Dahl, in simultaneous spoken English and American Sign Language, on Friday, April 23, at 7 p.m., Kean University’s Wilkins Theatre, 1000 Morris Avenue, Union, N.J.

Matilda is the classic story of an exceptionally bright young girl, who discovers she has supernatural talents that she uses to punish her corrupt parents and contend with Miss Trunchbull, the intimidating headmistress of her school. Combining the richness of theatrical spoken word with the beauty of American Sign Language and mime, this play will engage all audiences while providing a theatre experience that encourages sensitivity to diversity.

Cleveland Signstage Theatre was founded in 1975 by one deaf actor, Brian Kilpatrick, and one hearing actor, Charles Saint Clair. They established a unique performance form and maintained a reputation for bringing new artistic expressions to the stage as they toured nationwide and abroad. The theatre’s efforts and talents have been recognized with four Emmy™ Awards and two Cleveland Drama Critics Circle Awards.

Tickets are $15 for the public; $11 for seniors and alumni; and $9 for students and children. Black-and-white and color photographs are available upon request. For further information, to order tickets, or request a brochure, call the Wilkins Theatre Box Office at 908-737-SHOW (7469).
