Chava Alberstein to Perform at Kean University
UNION, N.J. From affectionate tunes about love and
peace to songs defiant of oppression, one of Israel’s most accomplished
singers, Chava Alberstein, will inform and inspire audiences on Wednesday,
October 27, at 7:30 p.m. at Kean University’s Wilkins Theatre, located
at 1000 Morris Avenue, Union, N.J.
Alberstein’s music epitomizes the poetry of the Israeli spirit
and the heart of the Jewish people. Having released more than 50 recordings
since the late 1960s, Alberstein sings primarily in Hebrew, but has also
dedicated entire albums to Yiddish-language songs. Six of her recordings
have been recognized with the Kinor David prize, Israel’s equivalent
to the U.S. Grammy Awards. Alberstein also released an English-language
album that covers standards by classic songwriters like George Gershwin,
John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Her latest accomplishment, titled End
of the Holiday, was distributed worldwide in 2004 to rave reviews.
“Alberstein’s quivering tenor is sublimely expressive, full
of pathos when caressing a ballad, frisky when riding the crest of a traditional
dance tune,” reported Entertainment Weekly. And The
New York Times called Alberstein “a thoughtful songwriter with
folksy roots, peaceable instincts, a voice filled with compassion and
an earnest desire to improve things.
Tickets are $25 for the public; $21 for senior citizens; and $17 for
children. Black-and-white and color photographs are available upon request.
