Mestizo Folkloric Ballet
of New York Performs
for First Time in New Jersey
UNION, N.J. –Mestizo Folkloric Ballet of New
York, the acclaimed troupe of dancers and musicians who celebrate the
spirit of Colombia, will appear for the first time in New Jersey at Kean
University’s Wilkins Theatre on Saturday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m.
The word Mestizo in Colombia and other parts of South America
refers to a person who is of mixed European and native American descent.
This company’s talented dancers, accompanied by live musicians and
singers, are dedicated to representing the traditions of all Colombians,
including indigenous South Americans, Spanish conquistadors and enslaved
Africans. Through movement and music, the Mestizo Folkloric Ballet will
cover dances from several distinct geographic and cultural areas –
from the mountainous Andes region; to the Llanera plains, otherwise
known as the home of the gauchos; and the coastal regions, which
are heavily influenced by African culture. The Village Voice
called this production, “a hearty sancocho of colors, rhythms
and sounds.”
Program is suitable for a non-Spanish speaking audience. Tickets are
$25 for the general public and seniors; and $15 for children. Call 908-737-SHOW
(7469) for more information or to make reservations. Wilkins Theatre at
Kean University is located at 1000 Morris Avenue in Union, N.J. Black-and-white
and color images are available upon request.
