FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Kean University Hosts Living With Aphasia Conference UNION, N.J. -- Kean University will host the fifth annual Living With Aphasia conference on Saturday, June 9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Downs Hall, located adjacent to the Vaughn-Eames parking lot on the main campus, 1000 Morris Avenue, Union, N.J. The Kean University Department of Communication Disorders and Deafness will join the New Jersey Stroke Connection, The American Stroke Association and the Adler Aphasia Center to provide a unique learning and networking experience for stroke and head trauma survivors living with Aphasia, family members, caregivers, and rehabilitation professionals. The keynote speakers will be Mike and Elaine Adler, founders of the Adler Center in Maywood, N.J. Other workshops will cover topics including ways to have effective conversations with individuals with aphasia; how to find reimbursement for continued rehabilitation services; and ways to enjoy a movie when you have aphasia. The program will also provide a wonderful opportunity to meet and network with other survivors, caregivers and professionals who "speak aphasia." Aphasia is a difficulty in speaking and understanding speech, which is a common affliction for persons who have experienced stroke or head injury. It is estimated that at least 80,000 to 100,000 persons with aphasia live in New Jersey. Guests attending the symposium on June 9 will learn about some of the most innovative and affordable options for treating aphasia, as well as new ideas for coping with the disability. Registration is $15 dollars for survivors/family members; $75 dollars for speech-language pathologists; and $15 for students. A breakfast buffet and boxed lunch are included in the fee. Vendors will be available throughout the day to demonstrate aphasia-friendly products, provide literature, and answer questions about their products and services. Several aphasia-related community groups will exhibit their work as well. CEU's are available for professionals attending the event.
