Kean University is Hosting the Third Annual Chamber Music Institute with the American String Teacher's Association of New Jersey
Performances for the public include the Daedalus String Quartet and
the Kean University Concert Artist Ensemble

UNION, N.J. – Kean University is excited again to host the Chamber Music Institute (CMI) on its main campus at 1000 Morris Avenue in Union, N.J. The first of two weeklong institutes will be held from Sunday, July 29 through Saturday, August 4, and the second from Sunday, August 5 through Saturday, August 11.

CMI is a residential classical-music camp focusing on chamber-music performance, where students in grades 9 through first year of college are assigned to work with a trio, quartet or quintet throughout the week. CMI is open to students who play violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp or classical guitar. Approximately 20-30 students participate per session in order to keep a low faculty-student ratio and a high level of personalized attention for every student. Students may sign up for one or both sessions.

Christopher Kenniff, concert artist in guitar at Kean University and director of ASTA CMI 2007, looks forward to two weeks of education, practice and performance. "ASTA CMI is a unique collaboration between the American String Teacher's Association of New Jersey and the Kean University Department of Music's Concert Artist Program," he said. "Student participants have the opportunity to work with Kean's wonderful faculty as well as invited master teachers, while gaining valuable experience working with their peers in this intensive program. I am thrilled to see this collaboration flourish for its third consecutive year and am thankful that our University supports such endeavors which benefit such a wide range of students throughout our area."

In addition to providing a learning experience for students, the CMI also offers many opportunities for the public to come and enjoy music of high caliber by both students and professionals. The Kean University Concert Artist Ensemble will perform on Sunday, July 29, at 7:30 p.m., and a performance and master class on August 9, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The program features works by Pitombeira, Brazilian Landscapes No. 6 for String Quintet , Levy Duo Concertante and Vaughn Williams Piano Quintet in c minor .

The Daedalus String Quartet (quartet-in residence of Lincoln Center Chamber Music 2 and Columbia University) will give a master class on August 2, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The program features works by Beethoven, Shostakovich and Brahms.

Please note that the master classes with the Daedalus String Quartet and the Kean Concert Artists will be held in Wilkins Theatre from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and the concerts by these ensembles will be held in Kean Hall at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets for the performances are $15; $10 for ASTA members and students, and may be purchased online at www.keanstage.com or by calling 908-737-SHOW (7469).
