UNION, N.J. – Kean University will host the first New Jersey screening of the multiple award-winning film War Dance, on December 3, at 3:30 p.m. in the University Center Little Theatre, located at 1000 Morris Ave. in Union, N.J. A discussion with Susan MacLaury, the film’s executive director and associate professor in Kean’s Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Health, will follow the screening. Admission is free.

“We are excited to have Kean University among the screening sites of War Dance, now in limited release across the United States,” said MacLaury. The film has won more than 20 national and international accolades, including a directing award from the Sundance Film Festival to Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine. Many critics consider War Dance among the few documentaries in the running for an Academy Award nomination.

War Dance is set against the backdrop of Uganda's 20-year civil war during which over 30,000 children have been abducted by a rebel army. The filmtells the story of Dominic, Rose and Nancy, schoolchildren in the Patongo Internally Displaced Persons camp, as they take an historic journey to compete in Uganda’s national music and dance festival. War stole their childhood. Dance gave them hope.

War Dance was produced by Shine Global, Inc., a 501(c)(3) film production company dedicated to ending the abuse and exploitation of children worldwide through the production of documentary films and other media. All contributions to Shine Global are used to produce films. Net profits are returned to the children through local non-governmental agencies.
