Organization of American States Grants Scholarship to Kean Student

Sherri Cumberbatch of Barbados will return to promote the island in advertising after graduating

UNION, N.J. – Sherri Cumberbatch, a senior Visual Communications/Advertising student at Kean University, earned a scholarship from the Organization of American States (OAS) to complete her studies in the United States. Cumberbatch choice of studies is rooted in her home country’s long history of tourism. “I thought it would be a beneficial area of study for me since in Barbados our main income business is tourism,” Cumberbatch explained. “I felt there needed to be a new outlook for the country to market itself.”

The highly competitive OAS scholarships require Cumberbath and other recipients to work in their home countries for two years upon graduation. Cumberbatch hopes to return to the States. She initially pursued a career in Graphic Communications Management. Cumberbatch, who is artistically inclined, learned from the Kean advisors that she could pursue Visual Communications/Advertising and still realize her goals. “In Barbados, I would like to work in the government with the advertising and marketing of the country to international markets,” said Cumberbatch. “Ideally, I hope to be running my own company eventually wherever I finally settle.”
