Award-winning Musical Performance to Benefit Speech Therapy Clinic in Union County, N.J.
UNION, NJ - Kean University’s Department of Theatre and the Institute for Adults Living with Communication Disabilities will host a benefit performance of the Tony award-winning musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee on Sunday, February 28, at 2 p.m. in Wilkins Theatre, located on the main campus at 1000 Morris Avenue, Union, N.J. Tickets are $25.
Operating under the auspices of The Center for Communication Disorders, the Institute offers expanded speech, language and rehabilitation support services, at minimal cost, to patients and caregivers suffering from aphasia, dysarthria, voice disorders, Parkinson’s disease and head injury. Services range from individual and group speech-language therapy to specialized training programs, counseling, client and caregiver support groups.
Funded entirely by individual contributions and foundation grants, clients pay a registration fee every semester for programs and services. The fee covers only a fraction of actual costs. The money raised from the performance will enable the Institute to continue providing affordable services for clients and their families.
"Funding for speech-language therapy in hospitals and rehabilitation centers is extremely limited," said Dr. Mary Jo Santo Pietro, the Institute’s director. "The majority of our clients have difficulty finding long-term services that are affordable or covered by insurance. Every dollar we raise helps our clients gain access to services they require beyond the expiration of their insurance benefits."
Tickets for the performance can be purchased by phone at 908.737.7469, or at the box office. Please request "Benefit Tickets." Content of the performance may not be appropriate for children under 14.
Individuals unable to attend the performance but who wish to support the Institute may make a contribution online at http://keanfoundation.org/institute_benefit, or by phone at 1-866-737-GIFT (4438). Donations can also be mailed to: Kean University Foundation, 1000 Morris Avenue, Union, N.J. 07083. Please make checks payable to "Kean University Foundation." Please designate your gift to the "Institute for Adults Living with Communication Disabilities."
A contribution of $1,000 will sponsor one client for one year. A contribution of $350 will sponsor a client for one semester, and $85 will cover one month of therapy. Contributions of any amount are welcomed and appreciated.
