The School of Communication, Media and Journalism is hosting the second annual CMJ Speech Contest on Wednesday, March 29th, 2023 at Kean University's Little Theater. During this in-person event, finalists will present a 5-7 minute persuasive speech or an approved informative topic. Doors open at 3 p.m. Contest begins at 3:30 p.m.

Release of Liability -                                                                     I understand that if I am one of the finalists of the School of Communication, Media, and Journalism’s Speech Contest 2022. I do hereby accept the winner position. I further understand that if I do not complete this form my entry will be disqualified, and another winner will be selected. No transfer, change, or cash substitution of Prize is permitted except at the sole discretion of the School of Communication, Media and Journalism. I, HEREBY RELEASE, INDEMNIFY, AND HOLD HARMLESS Kean University, and each of its parents, subsidiaries, directors, officers, officials, agents and/or employees, and the other participants, sponsors, advertisers, and owners (collectively, “RELEASEES”), from any and all claims, demands, losses, and liability that I now have, or hereafter may have, by reason of any matter connected in any way or arising out of the Contest, my participation in the Contest, the awarding of the giveaway Prize(s) or to any loss or damage to the giveaway Prize(s).  I hereby give my consent to the Kean University and any of its agents, contributors, partners, or affiliates of the Contest to use my entry and my name, voice, photograph, or likeness for advertising, publicity, or trade purposes in any and all media worldwide (including a prize winner’s list) without additional compensation or notification, as set forth in the Official Rules for CMJ’s Contest.

CONTEST RULES: SPEECH COMPETITION                          1. Application form must be complete and submitted by March 1, 2022 (prior to the preliminary competition). Handwritten applications go to Allison Edgley, CMJ Speech Contest Coordinator, via edgleya@kean.edu or deliver to the School of Communication, Media and Journalism CAS Room 402.                                                                                                      2. All certificates will be awarded by the School of Communication, Media and Journalism (CMJ).                                                                           3. Winners forever release and agree to indemnify and hold harmless CMJ and Kean University, their officers, employees and directors from and for any liability arising out of participation in the contest.             4. Applicants must provide Kean University (KU)/CMJ with their student identification.                                         5. KU/CMJ and its authorized representatives reserve the right to postpone, reschedule, delay, cancel and/or modify the contest dates and/or method of entry at any time.  KU/CMJ may be excused from its obligation to execute the contest if its performance is delayed or prevented due to cause beyond its control.  6. KU/CMJ reserves the right to refuse award to a person who is determined to have violated a contest rule outlined in this document.                                                7. Winners allow KU/CMJ to use their name, voice and/or likeness for advertising and promotional purposes without additional compensation.                            8. KU/CMJ reserves the right to change or alter the official rules, method of entry and/or award(s) without prior notification.                                                                     9. The decision of the judges is final.                                      10. KU/CMJ will keep your contact information confidential and will not make your address available to any other company or organization.                                      11. The speech should be a persuasive speech based generally on the persuasive speech given in Communication as Critical Citizenship (Comm. 1402).  The contestant may choose to change the speech topic, but must use the same for both the preliminary round and the final round if chosen.                                        12. The speech should be approximately 5-7 minutes in length and demonstrate the basic speech qualities examined in the required Pearson, Nelson, Titsworth and Hosek (2017) textbook for the course.                              13. The speech should demonstrate effective research, documentation, and critical thinking skills which both reveal logical, emotional appeals, and credibility of the speaker.
