Academic Programs

The Biomedicine Option provides a strong foundation in the biomedical sciences via an integrated curriculum of science and mathematics, including all prerequisite coursework to prepare for the medical school admissions test and prerequisite requirements for doctoral programs in biomedicine.  Students skills in research design and methodology are refined through the development of critical analytical skill building experiences. Following completion of the NJCSTM freshmen/sophomore core curriculum, students continue onto advanced coursework in microbiology, anatomy & physiology, immunology, biochemistry and neurobiology and take electives in human rights, sustainability science or history of medicine. Opportunities are for team research projects, service-learning and community outreach are available. The majority of students in the biomedicine option will apply to graduate degree programs in medicine, biomedicine or physical therapy. 

The New Jersey Center for Science, Technology and Mathematics (NJCSTM) offers a five year combined bachelor’s/master’s scholarship program with two separate degree tracks: Teacher Education & Science or Math Researcher. This is the only program in New Jersey that offers a core curriculum in the first two years that integrates science and mathematics courses linked to problem-solving, and hands-on laboratory courses to reinforce the classroom content. At the end of the fourth year students are awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Science and Technology.  At the end of the fifth year students in the education track are awarded a Master’s degree in Instruction and Curriculum and are eligible for state teacher certification in either biology, chemistry or mathematics. Students in the research track earn a master’s degree in biotechnology or computational science and engineering at the end of their fifth year.

The Master of Science program in Biotechnology Science is a 34-credit interdisciplinary program designed to prepare students for research in the expanding field of biotechnology through coursework and laboratory experience. Many students attend the program part-time while working in industry, as courses are scheduled in the evenings to accommodate the working student. Graduates become proficient in state-of-the-art technologies and are prepared to seek employment/advancement in biotech/pharma or to continue their study toward the Ph.D. degree in other graduate programs in related fields.

Kean University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) have partnered to offer the Engineering Science Scholars Program to highly qualified undergraduate students. Students in this program who meet all the requirements while in college are awarded a B.S. in Science & Technology/Engineering Science degree from NJCSTM at Kean University then complete their Master’s degree with the College of Engineering at NJIT.  The program will enable full-time students to earn both the Bachelor and Master degrees in five years.
