Certificate in Public Speaking and Presentation Training

Since ancient times, public speaking has been used as the medium to bring about change within organizations and community. Public presentations are one of the basic skills in the workplace and in the community. Salespersons are asked to sell products to groups; managers are called upon to motivate employees. Community organizers must recruit neighbors for civic engagement. Lobbyists and politicians rally support through speech for their causes. Friends call upon one another to share a toast at weddings, an appreciation at a retirement dinner, or a eulogy for a loved one at a funeral.

Giving a presentation involves learning to think on one’s feet. Awareness of verbal and nonverbal tools enhances a speaker’s credibility and skills. Audience analysis and use of visual aids are essential tools. Critical thinking and analysis of the public discourse of other communicators help to shape the eloquent communicator. Yet communication is not just a visual display, it is an ethical act that involves responsible interaction between the communicator and the wider community.

Career areas for speakers include Law, Politics and Community Organization, Ministry,

Public Relations, Management, Education, Recruitment, Training, Group Sales, Fundraising and Development

Kean University’s Certificate in Public Speaking and Training is specifically designed to offer you opportunities to practice giving speeches and at the same time learn the theoretical principles that guide speech formation. Develop your rhetorical critique skills by evaluating exemplar presentations from political, civic, religious, entertainment and business leaders. In addition, you will have an opportunity to have your own work critiqued by communication scholars who have studied speech-giving and have been professional speakers.

By honing your speaking skills, you will build your confidence and become a better listener. Gain competence in discussion techniques and in situations where you are expected to think on your feet. Develop skills to not only give public presentations but to critique the communicators of our day. Speech training raises consciousness of the world around us because it encourages communicators to become reflective of perspectives other than their own.

There are two admission tracks available: Graduate Credit and Noncredit. Individuals applying for credit status must show evidence of a bachelor’s degree (any area) from a fully accredited college or university. A bachelor’s degree is not required for noncredit status applicants. Continuing Education Units (CEU) and Professional Development Hours are available for non-credit as well as credit applicants.
