The Chi Mu Chapter at Kean University was established on May 25, 2006. Nine founding students were initiated in a ceremony that took take place in Hutchinson 100 at 6:30 p.m. The students met after the celebration and officers were elected at that time. In attendance were friends and family of the inductees, Dr. Vinton Thompson, Provost, Professor Joaquín Portuondo, Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages. Also in attendance were Dr. Alicia Portuondo and Dr. Berta Bermúdez, Faculty Advisor of Chi Mu. Kean University is the 539th institution in the United States to establish a Sigma Delta Pi Chapter.

It is an honor for students to belong to this honor society. The students are nominated by Kean University faculty and they undergo a process of selection conducted by a committee at the national level. They must have a minimum of a 3.0 average in Spanish on a 4.0 scale, and must be on the top 35% of their graduating class or have a cumulative GPA of 3.2. The student must also display exemplary character and a conduct that merits inclusion in an Honor Society.
