Second meeting of the ART HISTORY CLUB, Wednesday,
April ____, 2003
3:30 PM.
In attendance: Professor Mayhall, Kim Alvarado, President, two
students
Announcements:
The advisor of the Fine Arts Department wants to join forces with
the Art History Club to help organize a dual club involving both
departments. The Art History Club will need to speak to Joe Jatnowicz
about this. If this is beneficial to the Art History Club it would
be acceptable, however, if it would result in the dissolution of
the Art History Club per se, then we are not interested. Kim would
prefer co-presidents, using the names of both clubs. We need to
talk to Mr. Jatnowicz to get the specifics on what he has in mind.
Duties need to be spread out, otherwise one person ends up doing
all the work.
Web site needs to be updated. The Art History Club web site provides
information and updates on various trips and exhibits.
Prof. Mayhall advised the Club that she knows a Venezuelan artist
who lives part time in NYC. Prof. Mayhall considers him the greatest
living painter in Venezuela today. She would like to get him involved
at Kean or have the students visit his studio. He is a self-taught
artist who grew up in Caracas. Prof. Mayhall feels it would be a
good experience for both Art History and Studio majors to visit
an authentic artist’s studio. In addition, the
artist’s house itself is a work of art, according
to Prof. Mayhall. She is hoping that perhaps this May she will talk
to the artist.
Art History students should take advantage of the resources here
at Kean as well. For example, during a Club meeting, Art History
students can visit with Studio students to see what they are working
on, etc. Students from both majors can also talk about various projects
and papers they are working on for their classes. According to Prof.
Mayhall, it is important that Art History students understand how
art is created and we should take advantage of the fact that studio
artists are in the same building as we are.
Also discussed among the students at the meeting was the Introduction
to Art course. All felt that it should concentrate on teaching basic
art skills. Apparently, for the most part, this was not covered
in the Introduction to Art classes that have been taken by students
thus far.
Meeting adjourned at approximately 4:00 p.m.
Thank you to Maureen Starace for the Minutes
