A degree in Biology from Kean University prepares students for a wide range of careers as well as for further study. Recent graduates have been accepted into: master's and doctoral programs in the biological sciences; medical and dental schools; podiatric, chiropractic, and veterinary schools; graduate programs in physical and occupational therapy; and pharmacy and physician assistant programs. The department's Pre-Health Professions Web Page contains a wealth of advisement materials for undergraduates interested in pursuing a career in medicine, dentistry, and allied health fields. Other biology graduates have gone directly into the workforce. Some are employed by pharmaceutical companies or by federal or state governmental agencies, while others are working in hospitals or are employed as teachers or environmental specialists.

The Department of Biological Sciences is located on the first floor of the Science Building and adjacent Bruce Hall. In addition to classrooms, faculty offices, and research laboratories, these two buildings have well-equipped instructional laboratories specialized for courses in anatomy & physiology, biochemistry, botany, cell biology, developmental biology, ecology, genetics, immunology, marine biology, microbiology, molecular genetics, tissue culture, virology, and zoology. The department also has its own computer laboratory, with general and course-specific software. The computer lab is open each day for student use as well as for Biology classes. Additional facilities include a transmission electron microscope laboratory, a darkroom, and a greenhouse. Laboratories and an herbarium house extensive collections of plant and animal specimens.

If you are interested in the biological sciences and are thinking about pursuing a career in biology or a related field (such as teaching, research, biotechnology, environmental science, medicine, dentistry, or one of the allied health fields), Kean University has a program of study that can help you achieve your goals. The Department of Biological Sciences provides information and advisement about graduate and professional schools, internships, and work opportunities. Kean's Center for Academic Success also assists students and alumni in planning a career and in obtaining professional employment upon graduation.
