Martin D. Shulman, Ph.D., Chairman
I came to Newark State College (now
Kean University) in September 1973, after completing my doctorate at
the University of Minnesota. Through the years, I've taught most of
the undergraduate courses as well as many of the graduate courses. I
served as undergraduate Program Coordinator then graduate Program Coordinator
and now Department Chairman. My research interests have always centered
on language disorders, whether they occur in children or adults, and
I've published articles in both areas. As my administrative duties increased,
time for independent research has diminished. Now my research energies
are funneled through the masters students' research projects that I
direct.
Outside the walls of Kean University, I have maintained a small
private practice since 1976, providing speech-language pathology services,
both in my office in through visiting nursing agencies. I, indeed, do
practice what I preach. I served as the first Chairman of the state's
licensing board for speech-language pathologists and audiologists for
fourteen years; I was elected to represent New Jersey on ASHA's Legislative
Council and I have been an active member, past President and Committee
Chair in the New Jersey Speech-Language-Hearing Association since 1974,
where I currently serve as a member of its Board of Directors. Throughout
the years, I've observed my students in public schools, special schools,
hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, Early Intervention
programs and private practices. As I've been involved with the profession
in administrative, legislative, academic and clinical venues, I feel
I know it well. I derive a great deal of pleasure in guiding my future
colleagues as they pursue their degrees in preparation for exciting
careers as speech-language pathologists, audiologists or teachers of
the deaf and hard of hearing. In my role as Department Chairman, I seek
to support my faculty and our students, while coordinating the activities
of a dynamic department.
