Community & Volunteer Services
The Kean Service Corps (KSC)
The KSC is a group of trained student service consultants who are committed to civic engagement and employed by the Center for Leadership and Service. The KSC:
- assists students, staff and faculty with identifying volunteer, community service and service learning opportunities that foster leadership and community involvement;
- assists in providing quality educational programs and activities that focus on service and encourage civic responsibility and leadership development;
- promotes active citizenship by encouraging students to realize their potential to impact their community through volunteerism and service-learning;
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Connects the campus with external agencies and service opportunities in order to develop a commitment to humanitarian values and civic responsibility;
- Assists in organizing educational and service opportunities and programs for the Kean community;
- Maintains an up-to-date listing in a database of approved volunteer and service learning opportunities for students, staff, faculty that are available on and off campus;
- Maintains database of all student, group, and staff service profiles;
- Maintains all contracts and forms with community agencies and student volunteers;
- Coordinates all student volunteer service participation with CCT program.
- Assists in promoting volunteerism at campus events and through media and publications;
- Serves as volunteer consultant to students, student groups, T2K, leadership programs, Residence Life and other groups and departments as directed;
- Serves as a liaison to local community partners to provide quality placement for individuals and groups for one time and on-going volunteer activities as directed;
- Maintains accurate files, documentations, contracts etc.;
- Assists in identifying service -learning courses;
- Assists in promoting leadership/service courses for credit to students;
- Participates in staff trainings and team meetings as scheduled;
- Makes presentations on volunteer, community service and service learning opportunities as directed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum GPA of 2.5
- Demonstrated leadership potential
- Excellent communication and organization skills
- Matriculated student at Kean
- In good standing at Kean
- Commitment to volunteerism, community service and service-learning
- Ability to work at least 10-15 hours per week
- Available for staff training
- Staff meetings 1 x per week and as needed
SPECIFIC POSITION DESCRIPTIONS:
- Graduate Assistant – Coordinator of Community ServicesAssists in recruiting, supporting, facilitating faculty, service-learner, and agency service-learning partnerships; identifies and screens community agencies for volunteer, community service and service learning opportunities; makes community agency on site visits as needed; develops and maintains community agency and student agreements and forms; assists in developing a system for documenting reflections and evaluations by community service agencies, students and faculty; maintains regular contact with agency partners, faculty, and service-learners at beginning, middle and end of semester as directed; initiates and responds to feedback from agency partners, service-learners and faculty ; assists in training of the Kean Service Corps; oversees functions of the KSC; assists in the development of informative materials and publicity for service and service learning; serves as a liaison to students, staff and faculty on service learning opportunities; assists in the development of a service, volunteer and service-learning handbook; reports to Associate Director of the Center.
- Service Coordinator for Greek Organizations/Residence Life – Serves as a liaison to Greek organizations and Residence Life staff and students regarding volunteer, community service and service learning; coordinates and approves Greek organization service projects in consultation with Greek Life Advisor and CSL policies and procedures; maintains contracts and service agreements for all Greek organizations; makes service presentations for residence life students as directed and communicates regularly on opportunities for service; reports to the Associate Director.
- Special Events Service Coordinator – Assists in coordinating the service component for Campus Awareness Festival; assists in the development and coordination of the Martin Luther King Day of Service, Blood Drive, Breast Cancer Walk, Community Food Bank and other special service events as directed; serves as CLS service representative at tables on campus; assists in the development of calendar of service opportunities on campus; reports to the Associate Director.
- Service Publicity and Media Service Coordinator - Maintains the service component of the Leadership and Service Library as directed; serves as the technical assistant for the Filemaker Pro Database; collects testimonies through various media formats and works with Media and Publications to put together a Kean service video; maintains service information for CLS website, facebook, ItunesU and other networking information; ensures that reports to the Associate Director.
- Awards and Recognition Service Coordinator –Assists in the development and coordination of a Community Celebration and Service Reception; Assists in the develop-pment of Presidential Volunteer Service Awards, Giraffe awards and other recognitions as directed; assists in developing criteria for awards; serves as liaison to Cougar’s Byte and campus media to highlight Kean volunteers, serves as CLS representative at tables on campus; community service and service learners on a regular basis; reports to the Associate Director.
- Leadership Program Service Coordinator – Serves as a student liaison to LeadershipKEAN and other leadership programs as directed; assists participants in service project requirements for each level; assists recognized student groups in fulfilling mandatory service requirements; makes service presentations to student groups as directed; maintains accurate records of individual and group participation and coordinates with the CCT program; serves as CLS representative at tables on campus; reports to the Associate Director.
- Alternate Break and T2K Service Coordinator - Assists in coordinating Alternate Break opportunities with faculty, staff and student groups as recommended by the Advisory Board and student groups; serves as a liaison to T2K classes and makes service presentations as directed; serves as CLS representative at tables on campus; reports to the Associate Director.
