Types of Essays

What we had been taught thru time is that when we write an essay we must use good techniques, grammar, punctuation, organization, etc. We rarely hear something about what type of essays we should use when we write and what format we must follow.

Well there are many different types of essays, but actually they could be grouped into four categories:

  • Narration: The Personal Experience Essay
  • Description: Descriptive Essay
  • Exposition: The Process Essay
  • Persuasion: The Pro-Con Essay

Narration

Have you ever asked a grandparent to tell you a story about a long time ago? All of us have at some point done, because we like to hear what happened before. When they responded what he or she was doing was narrating a story, telling about events and actions that occurred in the pass.

Most of the time we use narration when we want to tell an experience that happened during a particular time. Also when we want to write it in chronological order and give descriptive details.

DESCRIPTION

Description is more used in poems, especially when you want to appeal to the senses and give a verbal picture. With the description you are trying to create an impression or a mood that will depend in the purpose of your writing.

Exposition
You used it when you want to explain something. And you will explain the steps of a certain process and sometimes you made have to use narration or description to tell the process.

Persuasion
You are trying to convince or induce the reader to change their ideas or the way they act. Your goal is to present the most accurate information based in facts. But sometimes you may include the knowledgeable of other people and some opinions.

The Personal Experience Essay

The personal experience essay is as the title implies a narrative essay in which you will tell about an experience you have had. A true story something that really happen. You will use narration in telling about what happened in which you may include dialogue and follow a chronological order.
Since the personal experience essay is compiled from your own background or knowledge of the events, you should keep in mind some guidelines that will make you write a successful essay.
·Chose a personal experience, something that you think will be interesting or beneficial to other people. You could use that as your topic or even better as your title, because what you choose to write is the elements that will make your essay interesting or unusual.
 · Always identify your audience and use an appropriate tone, your tone could vary from strong, humorous or sad, that depends in what you are writing.
