Process of Good Writing

Writing is a process that helps one to develop one's ideas and think logically. Writing skills are essential for succeeding in high school, college, and at a job. To write a good piece of writing is not an easy task, especially for 1430 students who are really struggling for good writing, and for whom English is a second language.  It’s a proverb "where there is a will there is a way ", which means if 1430 students wants to be good at writing they can. Everyone can write well if a person makes a firm decision to become good at writing. In order to achieve skills of a good writing, a person has to pass through a process of writing. Every work has its own way of doing, without achieving the knowledge of how to perform that work, one cannot get success. Same way to achieve Good writing, writer has to consider certain elements while in process of writing.

Invention - Freewriting: Invention is one of the processes of writing. Freewriting is one of the techniques of invention. Freewriting is a key of making writing creative. To make the writing creative, a writer has to climb a step of free writing. Florida State University’s Part IV: Teaching Ideas and Advice explains freewriting with certain traits.
  • Always keep an idea journal.
  • Cumulative writing with raw materials brings real writing, so keep writing when you get idea.
  • Put your ideas/thoughts in the form of paper.
  • Keep writing without caring of language, words, whether related to topic or are interrelated. When a person is in process of freewriting does the idea pop up by writing?
  • What makes writer start writing?
  • What keeps a writer to continue writing?
  • Are ideas based on past experience, circumstances /condition that surround writer? This entire peculiarity list works together to invent a new idea while a writer is in writing process.

Plan your writing:  Once a writer has all the ideas in the form of raw material, these raw ideas can be turned into polish and refine thoughts by chronology and planning. Writer should plan for writing before he/she starts writing. Find a way to organize your material. Initially it looks hard for writer to plan writing but gradually you can come up with so called quality piece of writing.  Good writing takes time for everyone. No one ever writes anything well the first time. This means writer has to plan his writing by keeping practice of continuing on writing every day. Good writing starts with your desire to create good writing. Writing can be planned by rewriting the raw material ideas, which result into improvement of your first ideas/Writing/thoughts. The more you rewrite the better your writing will be.

It should be clear and to the point: After going through the act of freewriting and strategy, there is a series of actions one has to care about Good writing, like it should be clear, concise and errorless. Clarity and preciseness/conciseness are discussed within this paragraph. Concise means the writing should be clear. Your goal should clearly communicate your idea, the less frequently the reader has to stop and wonder what you are  saying, the more clear you are and more interesting it becomes for reader to read Therefore, the writer never implies anything, but instead directly explains everything for the reader. In essence, the writer is responsible for providing the reader with all the information that is needed to make it clear. When the writing is clear and specific it automatically seems to the point. For example the topic of an essay is “Pet Animals” while essay is written on “Wild Animals” these way it is not pertinent and devoted to the topic of writing.

Good writing should be correct: Out of various approaches of writing, one of them is correctness. Following link page explains how students can achieve correctness in writing. Helping Students Achieve Correctness in Their Writing Good writing should follow the rules of grammar usage. Pay attention to standards and rules of language. If writing is not correct in meaning of grammar, it does not sound correct while reading. There is a chance of misinterpreting the meaning of sentences. One can achieve correctness by working thoroughly on errors made, by making error journal which has records of errors and remedies. Error journal becomes guideline for writer in achieving correctness in writing. In addition to this have habit of using Grammar reference book.

Reasons/evidence/Argument: Not only good writing should consist of virtue like correctness, clarity but it also requires reasons, evidence and arguments. Reasons itself means why? To make ideas look real and useful to others in solving there problems, one has to provide reason why ideas look real? Say for example, Women in United States like to watch a channel called ‘Lifetime’ because it resembles with the real life of USA women. Evidence is a kind of support to the arguments showed within the written ideas. In process of writing, when reasons are showed, one should follow up with the evidence because evidence acts as a backup to reasons. While constructing an argument, you must first try to sort out what you know about a subject and then to determine what you think about it. If your writing fails to inform, or if it fails to argue, then it will fail to meet the expectations of the reader.

Always have habit to revise the writing: As per the above mentioned passages of good writing there is one more process, which add essence to good writing that is to revise your writing. Revision improves writing. In order to become a good writer, first try to become a good reader. Try to read your own writing in order to find the errors. The article written by Fran Lahr Reading Rockets : Revision in the Writing Process elucidates about revision. The more you revise, better a writer understands his writing. This results a writer to come up with Good piece of writing. While revising writer can cut, expand and reorganize his/her ideas. To cut, expand and reorganize in sense, to take off something is repeated, to add new ideas or to exemplify the reasons given with the notions.

Good writing should be Reader oriented: Passing through all the procedure of writing process, in order to achieve good writing is well versed but to make identity of good writing by using the above mentioned skills become fruitful only if writing is read. These signify the main purpose behind writing is to get it read by reader. Readers are the most significant player in process of writing, the way Audience is in viewing Drama/play. Good writing has to be for reader, of reader, by reader. Writing is devotion for reader. In intent of, writing should engage and conveys readers by making him feel comfortable while reading. Write something that helps reader to better understand the topic, or to see it in a new way. Good writing has to be of reader’s interest. In act of, the tone of a good writing must be inviting reader to read and not showing dislike for reading. Good writing is only by reader in sense, if there would be no reader than a writer would have not existed. It is only reader who inspires writer to write. Readers are inspiration, confidence of writer. The real source of writer is reader itself. It is reader who decides whether the writing is good or bad. Value the people who are reader, Value what you are writing by studying the value of words. Be respectful while writing, before expecting respect from readers.

Above mentioned process is the type of track to achieve Good writing. I hope it enriches all 1430 students to develop there skills in good writing. They need to take care about certain process, not only while writing but also before starting the process of writing. They should put all the efforts to make there future bright by gathering maximum knowledge of writing. At completion of writing about process of good writing, Writer has to consider the relationship between topic and reader. Good writing need to use the right words to say the right things. Writing should sound real and it shouldn’t be exaggerations of the thoughts and the feelings Avoid doing the mistakes like grammar and spelling. While writing you must not only consider what you want to say, but also consider to whom you are saying. It is important to determine not only what you think about topic but also what your reader is likely to think about your writing. For 1430 students the above given hints is a door to enter where they can improve themselves in process of achieving good writing skills.

Neha, you have a good idea of what you want to say, but you should organize the ideas better. A good option could be to organize the essay in sections and break them down as the topic is developed. Also the word writing is repeated too many times along the essay causing the reader to be overwhelmed, knowing that the essay is all about good writing. This essay seems to be directed to anybody no just a specific audience. Do you have any specific examples of some of the techniques you present in your paper? Like the part where you mention free writing.  Is there any specific reason for you to write this essay, (not just the grade), do you really think you want to help other people to improve their writing skills? Do you have an anecdote you may want to share with the audience? Or did you figure out in your own case the root of the problem, do you think this is a problem? I ask this because in my opinion it would be easier to write when you really feel you want to help somebody else to improve, when you write from the heart the message can easily be transmitted. Where is all your information or ideas gathered from? Websites, books, magazines, what did you use to help you get all this ideas? Can you give more specific examples of how writing should be reader oriented and how the tone should invite the reader? Try to keep the same person through the essay, I noticed how the reader is brought in to the essay by using “Writing is a process that helps you to develop your ideas and think logically”(nb), and the next section the reader is left out by saying “Writing skills are essential for succeeding in high school, college, and at a job”(nb)  I think you should be more persuasive and present this as a really huge problem, because it is  a problem specially for foreign students like us, entering a higher level of education where writing is a must,  and we all need to get better at this, so if you maybe gather information from other people like students or relatives that would be very helpful. One more thing, try to give a little back ground on the issue and present the solution on a simple way.
