Facebook and Notes

In Facebook and Notes, Jeff Rice comments on New Social Software Tries to Make Studying Feel Like Facebook.

Nothing in the Chronicle’s report suggests that these highlighted tools teach any form of connectivity. Instead, students will supposedly read each other’s notes, and out of that reading compensate for what they failed to write down on their own. The connection of idea in one set of notes to an idea in another set of notes, then, is absent.

For real learning, there's a need to make connections, and he suggests:

Throw in some kind of tag/aggregation system that catches similarities and word/meaning patterns. Keep it open for all to read or sectioned (but open to read) by groups. As we write, connections appear.
