Freelance Writing is not Easy

Noah Davis writes on the difficulty of making it as a freelance writer in "I was paid $12.50 an hour to write this story." That's about $26,000 a year (without any benefits) if no vacations are taken and considerably lower than the national average of $42,979.61 a year.

Davis cites Nicholas Jackson, a former editor at The Atlantic, as saying,

There's a small handful of people who can make money online.

Meaning that most don't make money. Unlike Einstein who was able to escape his minimum wage position as a patent office clerk, most freelancers will need to continue supporting their writing with, as Davis puts it, "less glamorous work."
