Guidelines

Technology and Learning

Technology for technology's sake can be counterproductive to learning. Curriculum needs to drive the use of technology, not technology, the curriculum.

In using technology, some guidelines to keep in mind on how technology can facilitate learning include:

  • Student interaction, sharing, and networking
  • Student production (not only consumption) of knowledge
  • Exposure to different perspectives
  • Awareness of audience
  • Reflection on and resolution of differences in perspectives

In considering which technology to use, some questions (from Blogs as an Educational Tool II) to answer are:

  • Who's the audience?
  • What's your purpose? That is, what do you want yourself and your students to accomplish and why?
  • What's your strategy for accomplishing that purpose?
  • What's your strategy for integrating factors of learning and motivation?
