ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

 

I. Requirements for Admission to Undergraduate Teacher Education Programs

Application procedures initiated in the required sophomore field experience course. Application filed during sophomore year for four year KU students; approval granted at the beginning of the junior year. Application filed during first semester of junior year for transfer students.

  1. Completion of all developmental work
  2. Demonstration of proficiency in oral and written communication through completion of appropriate general education coursework with "C" or better
  3. Demonstration of proficiency in college mathematics through completion of coursework with "C" or better
  4. Successful completion of the introductory (sophomore) education course
  5. A minimum of 30 semester hours in General Education
  6. A minimum overall GPA of 2.75
  7. Satisfactory performance and evidence of interest in teaching as demonstrated in the introductory (sophomore) field experience
  8. Departmental application, interview, and narrative statement
  9. Successful completion of Speech & Hearing test
  10. Attainment of satisfactory scores on the Praxis I exam

These are minimum requirements. Students must consult with individual programs for specific grade requirements and other conditions for admission.


II. Requirements for Admission to Practicum/Junior Field Experience

Application filed in the Teaching Performance Center on April 15 for following spring semester and February for following fall and summer semesters.

  1. A minimum overall GPA of 2.75. (No below "C" grade will be accepted in any course necessary to meet program, graduate, or certification requirements.)
  2. Admission to teacher education program
  3. Completion of minimum number of courses in major, determined by department
  4. Completion of 60 s.h. applicable to studentís program

III. Requirements for Admission to Student Teaching

Application for student teaching must be filed in the Teaching Performance Center by April 15 for the following spring semester and by February 1 for the following fall and summer semesters.

  1. A minimum overall GPA of 2.75 (No below "C" grade will be accepted in any course necessary to meet program, graduation, or certification requirements).
  2. Attainment of appropriate score(s) on Praxis II for the intended area of certification
  3. Completion of a minimum number of courses in the major, determined by the department
  4. Completion of 95 s.h. applicable to studentís program
  5. Recommendation of junior field experience supervisor
  6. Approval by teacher education department

IV. Requirements for Institutional Recommendation for Certification

(Certification of Eligibility with Advanced Standing)

Application filed with the Office of the Registrar at the beginning of the final semester of the program, preliminary approval occurs during final semester; departmental/institutional recommendation occurs after completion of senior year.

A minimum overall GPA of 2.75 (No below "C" grade will be accepted in any course necessary to meet program, graduation, or certification requirements).

Successful completion of student teaching

Recommendation of public school personnel and college supervisor

Attainment of baccalaureate degree

Approval of department recommending certification


V. Requirements for New Jersey Instructional Certificate

  1. Institutional recommendation
  2. Attainment of appropriate score on Praxis II
  3. State Department of Education verification of transcripts and related documents
  4. Seeks employment with a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing
  5. Receives Provisional Certification upon offer of employment
  6. Successful completion of provisional year under mentorship program*
  7. Recommendation by public/private school for the standard certificate

Post-Baccalaureate Certification Programs

Admission Requirements

2. A minimum overall GPA of 2.75

3. Attainment of appropriate score on Praxis II exam

4. Undergraduate application and essay demonstrating commitment for the teaching profession
