Organizations

Conference on College Composition and Communication
The Conference on College Composition and Communication is the major professional organization for college writing teachers.

New Jersey Writing Alliance
The New Jersey Writing Alliance is an organization of New Jersey writing teachers, from elementary school to college. NJWA sponsors a conference every year and maintains a listserv to help members share common concerns.

National Council of Teachers of English
The National Council of Teachers of English is the major professional organization for all English teachers, from elementary school to college. Their site contains information on all their programs as well as access to their online bookstore.

Modern Language Association
The Modern Language Association is the major professional organization for college English professors. The site includes a membership directory, a store, and information on MLA style.

Council of Writing Program Administrators
The Council of Writing Program Administrators is an organization for people who run writing programs. The site lists information about their conferences, the group's listserv, grants, and their newsletter. The site also contains several position statements on practices in teaching writing, such as outcomes for First-year Composition and plagiarism.

Rhetoric Society of America
The Rhetoric Society of America is an organization of scholars who study rhetoric. The site includes information about conferences sponsored by the group, their journal, and other sites useful to the study of rhetoric.

American Educational Research Association
The American Educational Research Association is a group for people interested in educational research. The site includes news about the organization, position statements, and selected articles from their journal.

Publishers in Composition and Rhetoric

Online Journals

CCC
CCC is the journal of the Conference on College Composition and Communication. The site includes articles from the current issue (available only to subscribers), as well as subscription and submission information.

CCC Online Archive
This site supplements the main CCC site by providing reprints of selected articles from the journal.

Lore
Lore is an online journal for adjuncts, graduate students, and untenured faculty who teach writing. It includes articles on teaching and on professional issues affecting their target audience, particularly adjuncts.

Composition Forum
Composition Forum, according to its home page, is "a journal of pedagogical theory in rhetoric and composition." Exclusively online, the site contains articles, descriptions of successful writing programs, and archives of past issues.

The Writing Instructor
The Writing Instructor, according to its home page, is "a networked journal and digital community for writers and teachers of writing." It includes articles as well as a searchable archive.

Journal of Basic Writing
This site is the electronic version of the Journal of Basic Writing. Its articles may contain useful strategies for teaching ENG 1031/1032 and ENG 1033/1034.

Writing Program Administrator
This site is the electronic version of Writing Program Administrator. While the journal targets people who run writing programs, its articles are often of interest to all writing teachers.

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
The International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning publishes research on classroom practice. This site includes electronic copies of the current issue, as well as links to a listserv associated with the journal.

Kairos
Kairos is one of the major online journals that focuses on computers and writing. Many of its essays are designed as web texts, using conventions that are not possible in print.

Computers and Composition
This site is the electronic version of Computers and Composition, one of the first journals to publish research on computers and writing. In addition to articles, the site contains a blog for discussing computers and writing.

Journal of Computer Mediated Communication
This site is the electronic version of The Journal of Computer Mediated Communication, which focuses on computers and writing. It includes a free archive of articles published in the journal.

Across the Disciplines
Across the Disciplines focuses on writing across the curriculum. The site also archives the two journals that merged to create Across the Disciplines: Academic.Writing and Language and Learning Across the Disciplines.

Young Scholars in Writing
Young Scholars in Writing is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes undergraduate research into writing and rhetoric. This site contains the journal's editorial policies as well as a list of articles published in past issues.

Bibliographies

CompPile
CompPile is the first on-line database dedicated to indexing publications on composition and rhetoric from 1939 to 1999. It is one of the few electronic databases I know of that contains citations for the older articles in the field.

CompFAQs
CompFAQs, according to its creator Glenn Blalock, "features topics in college composition that repeatedly attract questions despite the fact that a substantial body of answers are available. CompFAQs does not aim to give all the answers, just to provide an ongoing base of reliable information and a fund of resources."

Teaching Basic Writing (CompFAQs)
This portion of CompFAQs contains a list of scholarly texts on teaching basic writing. Users can add to the list, thus contributing to the larger knowledge of the field.

BasicWriting.org
According to its homepage, this site aims to be "a portal for students, teachers, and scholars in the field of basic writing." It includes a set of links to useful books and journals in the area.

The Rhetoric Page at Kettering University
This site is a clearinghouse of links dealing with composition and rhetoric. It is one of the most comprehensive sites on this topic.

The Second Rhetoric Page at Kettering University
This site is an extension of the Rhetoric Page at Kettering University. It includes links to sites dealing with rhetoric, popular culture, publication, and general research sources.

The Bedford Bibliography for Teachers of Writing
This site is an online version of The Bedford Bibliography for Teachers of Writing, edited by Patricia Bizzell, Bruce Herzberg, and Nedra Reynolds.

The Bedford Bibliography for Teachers of Basic Writing
This site is an online version of The Bedford Bibliography for Teachers of Basic Writing, second edition, edited by Linda Adler-Kassner and Gregory Glau.

Rebecca Moore Howard's Bibliographies
This site contains some of the bibliographies developed by well-known composition scholar Rebecca Moore Howard. The range of topics starts with ability groups and ends with WPAing, covering a lot of subjects in-between.

Rhetcomp.com
Rhetcomp.com is an index of web sites useful to people in Composition and Rhetoric, including journals, listservs, organizations, calls for papers, and blogs.

Rhetoric and Composition on Eserver
This site is a clearinghouse for links that might be useful for learning more about writing and rhetoric. The site also includes copies of texts as well as information on journals, listservs, and professional organizations.

Paul Kei Matsuda-Resources
Maintained by Paul Kei Matsuda, this site contains links to information on ESL, rhetoric, online bibliographies, conferences, journals, listservs, publishers, organizations, and other sources useful to writing teachers.

Journals in Rhetoric and Composition
This page, part of the Council of Writing Program Administrator's web site, contains links to journals that publish articles on composition and rhetoric.

Useful Web Links for Composition Instructors and WPAs
Sandra Jamieson, Director of Composition at Drew University, maintains this clearinghouse of links.

Rhetoric and the Christian Tradition
This site provides information on connections between rhetoric and Christianity. It includes a bibliography, collection of reviews, and list of upcoming events.

Listservs

WPA-L
This page contains the archives for WPA-L, possibly the best known listserv on writing and the teaching of writing. You can subscribe to the list, which I strongly recommend, using this page. The list is very inclusive, and the discussions can help you learn a lot about teaching writing. (Editor's note: this list can be very high traffic some times, so you may want to set it up so you get the digest version.)

CBW-L
This page contains information on joining CBW-L, a listserv for people who teach and who are interested in basic writing.

H-Rhetor
This page explains how to join H-Rhetor, a listserv that focuses on the history of and research into rhetoric, writing, and communication. The site also includes a searchable archive and a collection of links.

Call for Papers Listserv
This site explains how to subscribe to the University of Pennsylvania's Call for Papers listserv. The listserv provides calls about conferences and publications in English Studies.

WPA Outcomes Statement for First-Year Composition
This page presents the WPA (Council of Writing Program Administrators) Outcomes Statement for First-year Composition. It lists basic competencies and skills that most people in the field of composition and rhetoric believe students should possess when they complete a First-year Composition course.

Defining and Avoiding Plagiarism: The WPA Statement on Best Practices
This page presents the WPA statement on plagiarism. The statement defines plagiarism, suggests some causes of it, proposes responsibilities (for students, teachers, and administrators), and recommends practices that can help prevent it.

NCTE Teaching Resource Collections
This portion of the National Council of Teachers of English site contains resources on important topics in English and Language Arts pedagogy, including literacy coaching, teaching poetry, and reading and writing on the web.

Basic Writing Best Practices (CompFAQs)
Created by students of Basic Writing expert Linda Adler-Kassner, this portion of CompFAQs describes best practices for teaching basic writing.

Facilitating Effective Classroom Discussions
Written by Jennifer Barton, Paul Heilker, and David Rutkowski, this site gives suggestions on developing effective class discussions.

Guide to Discussing a Crisis

This site includes information used by Bedford/St. Martin's New Media Editor Nick Carbone to teach instructors about plagiarism.

WSU Plagiarism Information Site
This site, developed by Washington State University, discusses how to spot plagiarism, recommends strategies for designing assignments to limit it, and includes a section on intellectual property. While some of the material is specific to this school, the site provides a clear overview of the issues surrounding plagiarism.

Joseph Williams' "The Phenomenology of Error"
This site contains a copy of Joseph Williams' article "The Phenomenology of Error." In this essay, Williams discusses how differences in context affect how readers perceive grammatical errors.

Sample Rubrics
This site, maintained by Winona State University, is a clearinghouse of sample rubrics. They include examples for classroom assignments across disciplines.

Fast Facts for Faculty, according to its home page, contains "information briefs designed to help college and university instructors improve the climate and quality of education for students with disabilities."

Writing Across the Curriculum Clearinghouse
The Writing Across the Curriculum Clearinghouse is the main site for learning about using writing in courses besides First-year Composition. The site includes free downloadable publications, a collection of links, and a bibliography of sources on writing across the curriculum, among other resources.

Computers in the Classroom

Computer Teaching Tips
Created by Stephen Krause of Eastern Michigan University, this site gives advice on teaching with computers, ranging from email to creating web pages. The site also provides a list of links to additional information.

Bedford/St. Martin's Workshops on Teaching with Technology
This site contains materials for workshops (developed by well-known experts Cindy Wambean, Douglas Eyman, and Nick Carbone) on teaching writing with technology. Topics includes reasons why writing teachers should use computers, strategies for preparing to use technology and for managing the workload, and student activities.

Bibliography: Writing with Computers
This site, maintained by Cindy Wambeam, contains a collection of online resources for teaching with computers, including links to conferences, journals, and online bibliographies.
