Multiple sections of a course can now be cross-listed for WebCT 4.1
Cross-listing of course benefits the instructor greatly by reducing the management and update tasks significantly
Who should use cross listed courses?
If you are teaching more than one section of a particular course, (example: ACCT1000 section 01, 02, 03…) planning to use exactly same teaching materials and methods for these sections, you may try the course cross listing
How course cross listing is done?
One of your course section (usually the first section in the series) is set as the Master Course, rest of the sections are set as slave or cross listed section. If your course sections are cross listed, you will only see one section for the course (the Master Section) in your portal. All other cross listed sections will appear under the course, (but they will not be clickable or manageable) so you will know which sections are tied with the master course
How does cross listing of course work?
The master course will control the cross listed courses. If you update/add/delete/release/restrict/modify any item in the master course, changes will instantly be propagated to the cross listed courses and all of them will reflect the changes immediately.
From student’s perspective, they will not notice any change, they will still be enrolled in their respective registered section. But as a designer/instructor of your course, you can manage and track all students through your Master Course, which eliminates the need of logging in to multiple shells for content update and student tracking. For example, if your master course is ACCT1000 section 01, and section 02 and 03 is your cross listed course, you will see all of your students enrolled in section 01, 02 and 03 together in the Master Course (in this case, section 01). However, each student’s record will display which section they are enrolled to.
What cross listing does not do?
Cross listing virtually combines your students only for you. This means, students are literally confined within their respective section shell. For example, students in section 03 will not be able to communicate, use discussion, posts etc with section 01, 02 or vice versa
Default Assumption by OCIS
From past experience we have seen instructors tend to use the exact same materials for different sections of the same course. If you are requesting for multiple sections for the same course, it will be automatically considered for cross listing, unless otherwise mentioned explicitly in the comments section while you submit the course request
Course Request Submission Procedure
There will be no change in course request submission procedure at all. Please keep using the OCR forms as you were using before
