Frequently Asked Questions

UNDERGRADUATE QUESTIONS:

Do I have to take the 1 credit EMSE3903 with Junior Field or am I allowed to take it in a different semester?

It is important to take the course prior to Junior Field or concurrently with Junior Field.

When should I take the two Praxis exams that are required?

You should take the Praxis II, Elementary Content Knowledge exam and the Early Childhood Content Knowledge exam in advance of your senior student teaching semester. You must submit to the Teaching Performance Center your passing scores by August 15th for Fall semester student teaching and by November 1st for Spring student teaching. The tests to register for are Praxis II, Elementary Content Knowledge, 10014 and Praxis II, Early Childhood Content Knowledge, 10022.  You can find online registration information at www.ets.org/praxis.

Do all my courses need to be taken before senior field or can I take courses with senior student teaching?

ALL of your ID/EC/EDUC courses need to be completed with grades of C or better prior to your doing your senior field. EC4000 is taken in the same semester with your student teaching (EC4400). There are special circumstances where a student may need to take an additional course in her/his academic major in the same semester as the senior field, but special permission is required. Please see an EC advisor.

I am a transfer student and I came to Kean as another major because my GPA was not a 2.75. In my first semester at Kean I had a GPA above 2.75. Can I now become an intended EC major?

No, first you have to go the College of Education advisor for transfer students and get a composite GPA form completed. As soon as a composite GPA shows a 2.75 or better, you can come to the department to become an Intended EC major.

I don’t understand the Academic Major requirement.

You are required to choose an academic major of at least 30 credits as indicated on your EC program guide sheet. Information about academic major choices can be found via a link on the department website or from the Dean’s office (HH-443).

Can I choose Psychology or Sociology as my Academic Major?

Yes.
