COURSE PLACEMENT INFORMATION FOR INCOMING STUDENTS

 

After you have taken the placement test, you will receive your test results (Letter of Advisement) in the mail, along with the following course placement information:

EEO/EOF Program Pre-Freshman Summer Academic Courses

Reading-students placed in one of the three
  • CS 0409 Basic Reading Skills  (non-college credit)

  Designed to develop proficiency in reading to meet the curriculum needs of succeeding courses at the college level. The emphasis is on vocabulary development and comprehension skills.
Recommended scheduling

  • CS 0412 Introduction to Academic Reading  (non-college credit)

 Taken with a Content Course
Designed to develop proficiency in reading across the curriculum with emphasis on the reading demands of a paired course (PSY 1000 or SOC 1000). Demonstration of college level performance. There is a reading laboratory requirement and a computer assisted instruction fee.
 Prerequisite: CS 0409 and/or placement based on testing

  • CS 1501 College Reading and Study Skills  (3 college credits)

Reading and learning skills are programmed to increase efficiency in these areas. Skills include speed of comprehension, areas of comprehension, vocabulary and the study skills of concentration, note-taking, time-scheduling and test organization. Recommended as an elective for those students who seek a strong development program in learning.

Writing-students placed in either:
  • ENG 0110  Writing Seminar  (non-college credit)

Intensive writing workshop with focus on grammar and effective sentences, paragraphs and essays. Emphasis upon the writing process and integral critical thinking skills. Individual and collaborative writing assignments will culminate in a
class project. Pass/Fail. No college credit.

  • ENG 1030 College Composition  (3 college credits)

Development of flexible processes for composing writing to meet academic purposes across the curriculum.
Recommended scheduling

Students requiring Math improvement, will take the following course:
  • MATH 0901 Basic Algebra  (non-college credit)

Topics include: Operations with Real Numbers, Simplifying Algebraic Expressions, Linear Equations, Graphing Equations of Lines, Applications and Word Problems, Operations with Polynomials, Factoring Polynomials, Solving Quadratic Equations, Operations with Square Roots

Content Courses
  • PSY 1000 Gen. Psychology  (3 college credits)

Introduction to the scientific study of behavior: biological bases of development and behavior, learning, motivation, perception, cognition, personality, abnormal behavior, measurement of behavior, and social behavior. Foundation for those interested in the behavioral sciences of human service occupations.

  • SOC 1000 Intro to Sociology  (3 college credits)

The study of social life, society, and the individual within a global and multicultural context.

  • THE 1000  Introduction to Theater  (3 college credits)
    Survey of the basic elements and theories of theatre production with practical experiences in theatrical production and field trips to pro- fessional and amateur productions. Field trip fees required.
