What is Writing Across the Disciplines?
What is Writing to Learn?
What is Writing across the Curriculum?
And why are they important in the classroom?

Research shows that writing improves knowledge acquisition and retention across subject matter--from history to the hard sciences. Although many teachers from kindergarten through college already know this, we still struggle with incorporating writing-based learning into our classrooms.

To meet these needs, The Kean University English Department will host:

Active Writing, Active Learning:
Teaching Writing to Learn and
Writing Across the Disciplines

Saturday, March 10, 2007
Center for Academic Success
Kean University
Continuing Education credits will be awarded by Kean University.

At this Institute, K-16 teachers will discuss and design interactive writing assignments to help students remember, understand, and synthesize classroom learning.

Keynote speaker Joan Mullin, a nationally-known expert in Writing Across the Curriculum at the University of Texas, Austin, will introduce strategies to engage students in using writing to learn without increasing our workload. Then, participants will continue exploring these principles in facilitated groups and develop dynamic, usable classroom writing practices. In addition, a variety of educational publishers will host a book fair that features both professional development and practical pedagogical texts.

The institute will take place on Saturday, March 10, Starting with coffee and registration at 8:30 a.m. The event will conclude at 4:30 p.m.
