Differences Between Universities in Ghana and the U.S.

By Abigail Amoah

Countries have many different rules in their university systems. In this essay, I would like to talk about the rules in the university system in Ghana, the ways other universities teach, the materials they use to teach, and how their universities treat their teachers.

Every country has different rules and regulations to follow in the universities. In Ghana, they also have different rules to follow. These kinds of rules are sometimes the same as in the United States. In Ghana, you can’t copy from books or any resources without giving credit to the author or copying from other students. But you can paraphrase your work to make it your own. But when you copy from any source and not give credit to the author, your instructor will just cancel your work. And if you do that again, the university would not kick you out of the university; it would punish you. The same applies in the United States. You can’t copy from resources or anyone without giving credit to the author. You can also paraphrase your work. But when you copy from that kind of resources without giving credit to the author, you can be kicked out of the university.

The use of different kinds of materials in Ghana is not the same as the United States. You cannot use a calculator in an exam room in Ghana. All you can do is memorize things or use your brain to do the math sections so you can do your work. But in the United States you can use the calculator on your exams without a problem.

The ways that some universities treat their teachers in Ghana are bad. The university system in Ghana doesn’t pay their teachers very well, so when they come to class without enough money in their pocket or enough to pay their bills, this makes them very angry. Due to this, they would come to school unprepared and would not have the spirit to teach. But in the United States the system is totally different because I know that they get a better income and some benefits to take care of their family and always come to school prepared to teach.

In conclusion, I would like to say that the university system in Ghana should treat their teachers much better, so when they come to teach the class, they would be ready and prepared. The university system in Ghana should provide some benefit to the teachers. And I also think that the university system in the United States should have the students minimize the use of calculators. They should let the student use their brains to do their work more often. In this way, it could help the student in future by limiting the use of technology in their life and use their head.
