Steps to Change your Major

By Badio Jean Claude

At Kean University, sometimes a student can start with an intended major; although after some bad experiences with the courses or advice from family or friends, it’s possible to change your initial major to another one. How can a student proceed to change his/her major in these circumstances?

First of all, you are supposed to go to the One—Stop building where the president’s office is located; then on the first floor, request a “Change of major form.” Once you get it, fill it out. After that, take it to the Chairperson of your first major’s department. After the endorsement of the Chair, next take the new form they give you back to the One—Stop Service to officially approve your declared major. Finally, they will tell you to wait for a couple of weeks until they mail you your request agreement.

You can change your major at anytime you want, but you must do it before the registration date. In addition, make sure you are well informed about the new major before making a decision, which can affect your future. Sometimes, students are not sure of what to learn; they keep changing their major, and consequently they can stay for a long time in school without graduating. It is a waste of time and money.

Finally, I advise you to be aware of your strengths and your weaknesses, consult with yourself or see an advisor before plowing through a decision like that.
