Kean Unviersity Presents Evolution Conference

Kean University: Evolution and Education Discussion

October 30, 2009 - 8:30am-2:15pm

Overview of Evolution Conference and Events:

Teachers in New Jersey high schools are often woefully under-prepared to teach evolution well or combat challenges from students and parents.

The Evolution and Education conference is Kean University’s contribution to providing the state’s science teachers with practical knowledge, teaching strategies, and educational source materials to better tackle this potentially problematic topic.  If teachers are better prepared, they can do their job well and deal with probing questions professionally and in a way that reduces tension and helps prevent the kind of incidents that have befallen other states.  This in turn leads to New Jersey students being better prepared academically.

A collection of guest speakers, well known in the fields of evolution studies, science education, and history, will give talks and conduct forums on teaching evolution in the New Jersey public school system.

The day will consist of two sessions. The morning session will include the general introduction and then presentations by the invited speakers. After a break for lunch the presenters and audience will engage in break out sessions which will allow for more intimate and informal discussion of prearranged topics. All attendees—especially those who are teachers—will be issued a packet which includes information on the subject, on the guest speakers, references and other materials to enhance the discussions and which can be taken back to their respective schools to aid them in their work.
